Player Spotlight: 2020 OF/RHP Matthew McHale (Arkport HS)
May 16, 2018
Our "Player Spotlights" will be reserved for any prospect across New York who's abilities on the field have made some noteworthy recent buzz. Possibly a recent event where a Top Performer Spotlight article is just not enough, or maybe a recent commitment to a major program. Whatever it is, I'll (Dan Cevette) be going in-depth on the player spotlighted below with personal insight and honest feedback. Let's get started.
Matthew McHale OF / RHP / Arkport , NY / 2020Rankings StateRank: 25 / POS: 7
CEVETTE'S QUICK HIT: Loved the high end motor, the skills appeared to be advanced, and the results were impressive. Quick arm from the OF that transfers to the mound, and there's already easy looseness to his swing in the box. Hidden in the western southern-tier, McHale has a chance to explode at the NYS Games. SCOUTING REPORT: standing 5-foot-7, 150-pounds from a very lean athletic build, ran a 4.25 home-to-first, extremely scrappy hard-nosed player in the 2020 class on the rise. he uses a slightly open stance at the plate, wide base semi crouched with loose hands. Has a long aggressive stride on the pitch sometimes getting himself out in front too early, although it does work for his aggressive style, barrel path is mostly level to the ball, 86 mph exit velocity off a tee showing plenty of easy bat speed, pull side power is evident now. From the OF, very athletic and aggressive to the ball fields on his glove side out in front with a quick clean transfer, arm strength is well above average for his age peeking at 87 mph with plenty of hand speed out in front from a high 3/4 slot. From the mound, is mechanics show fluid pace slightly fast in tempo, high leg lift. He uses the drop and drive method, drives hard on his back side towards home plate, lands with full hip separation and stride length, delivers the pitch from a high 3/4 slot with clean arm action, 81 mph fastball, curveball has 10/5 late shape at 65-68 mph. Overall, extremely talented 2020 prospect to keep a close eye on from the Southern Tier of New York.
