Our "Player Spotlights" will be reserved for any prospect across New York who's abilities on the field have made some noteworthy recent buzz. Possibly a recent event where a Top Performer Spotlight article is just not enough, or maybe a recent commitment to a major program. Whatever it is, I'll (Dan Cevette) be going in-depth on the player spotlighted below with personal insight and honest feedback. Let's get started.

Gage Ziehl 3B / RHP / Penfield, NY / 2021
Cevette's Quick Hit When looking at the freshman class here in NY, normally measurable stats are one of the last things of note. Not because they aren't important, but because at that freshman level the players are physically under developed. Well.... Ziehl is a man among boys. Already with eye popping numbers (90 exit velocity) and (87 arm) and he's got four year's at the HS level to keep gaining steam. I love his easy effortless swing at the plate. He attacks the ball out in front but it's loose and the ball just explodes. On the mound much the same with an effortless fastball that peaked at 87. We see him at the NYS Games June 25-27 and expect his performance to gather some serious attention.
Scouting Report Ziehl stands 5-foot-10, 180-pounds with a strong build. He ran a 7.36. Offensively- At the plate he uses a slightly open stance, relaxed setup, light toe-tap and load for timing. Slight stride on the pitch with a loose repeatable swing path, strong with above average bat-speed (90 MPH exit velocity). Defensively- Stays behind the ball, fields slightly deep with a choppy lower half. Arm peaked at 81 MPH across the diamond with minimal effort. Pitching- On the mound he was very impressive. Mechanics are fluid with tempo, uses a high leg lift with power-line direction towards home. Arm swing is back and fluid, full extension out in front releasing from a high 3/4 slot. Fastball ranged 82-86, peaking 87 MPH one time with downward angle at times. Curveball sat in the upper 60's with true spin and feel for the strike zone, 11/5 shape. Overall, Ziehl looks to be one of the top 2021 graduates in the state off the mound.
