Scout Blog: Big Apple Preview

Jared Carrier
Scouting Director

On Sunday October 15th PBR-NY hosted it's 'Big Apple Preview' at the Verrazano Baseball Compex in Staten Island. Nearly 60 players joined us on the day. As we highlight several players that caught our eye there were several other players not mentioned who all brought at least one high-end skill to the table.

The Prep Baseball Report - NY is your No. 1 source for all amateur baseball coverage in NY, including 24/7 promotional material via several multi-media platforms. Taking things one step further, and something that is often forgotten, we are an unbiased Scouting company. Below is a look at the day's scouting blog on some of the player's that stood-out.

Gavin Noriega 1B / OF / Salesian, NY / 2020

Big things ahead from a compact 5-foot-7 175 pound frame. Above average pop in the bat for his age. Fluid swing with balance.  Better suited at 1B but showed some arm strength from the OF at 83 MPH.

Christopher Polgano 3B / C / St. Raymonds , NY / 2019

One of the best rounds of batting practice on the day, the versatile Polgano peppered the left center gap and looked solid both behind the plate and at 3B. A definite follow.

Wesley Cuevas 1B / RHP / New Dorp , NY / 2018

Cuevas has been with us a few times and his position player workout really stood out today. Athletic around the bag at 1B and a balanced, line drive stroke from gap-to-gap.

Reynaldo Angeles SS / RHP / Benjamin Cardozo , NY / 2021

One of the rising stars at the event, the slick fielding shortstop has an edge to him. Showed an above average arm across the daimond with advanced up the middle actions. Once he frees up at the plate, look out.

Daniel Cordero 3B / C / Benjamin Cardozo, NY / 2018

Solid defender at 3B but also working in behind the plate based on need for his HS. One the easiest swings on the day with natural whip through the zone. Steady, all-around player.

Justin Anglero RHP / OF / Grand Street Campus, NY / 2019

Athletic OF/RHP who projects better on the mound with an easy 82-84 MPH fastball and feel for secondary offerings.

Matthew Solano 1B / RHP / James Madison , NY / 2018

One of the more intriguing players at the workout. Claims to play everywhere but choose 1B for the defensive workout. Highly athletic player that moved like a middle infielder at first base. Offers some funk on mound as he alternates arm angles and can be upper 70's with a side arm delivery.

Jhojandy Hernandez OF / Salesian , NY / 2018

An athletic monster running a 6.64 60 on a wet/high grass track. Easily could be 6.5 range on turf. Line drive approach at the plate with a serviceable arm in the OF.

Antonio DiGrigoli C / RHP / Midwood, NY / 2022

Not many 2022's in the system but age is merely a number for DiGrigoli as his advanced actions will lead to a Top 5 ranking when the 2022's come out (will be a while). Low to the ground setup with quick transfer and footowork and suitable arm. Balanced, line drive approach to all fields.

Jujmilian Poueriet RHP / OF / Richmond Hill , NY / 2018

Another intriguing athlete who ran a 6.80 60. Somewhat raw as a position player but showed some feel on the mound sitting 78-81, touching 82. Fast arm, slight hesitation mid balance point. Curveball and change both with late action and good differentials.

Keven Franco RHP / SS / Richmond Hill , NY / 2018

One of the best arms on the day sitting an easy 82-84 with life. Works through a lower 3/4 slot with tight spin to the breaking ball at 67-68 MPH. Worked out positionally as well and needs to be more consistent with the bat. Glove and arm could point to a 3B projection if the offense comes along.

Leroy Evangelista SS / RHP / Richmond Hill , NY / 2018

Another athletic from Richmond Hill HS in Queens. Short , line drive stroke with some late acceleration through the zone. Clean actions at short; no panic. On the mound he works downhill with long arm action from a 3/4 slot. Sat 78-80 MPH with a 12-to-6 CB. More in the tank here.
