Top Prospect Games Analysis: Outfield Reports from Aug 16th

The New York Top Prospect Games were a huge success, bringing together many talented players from all over New York showing off their skills in front of roughly 40 college scouts and two MLB scouts. We are already focused on making next years Top Prospect Games even better. From this years event, in only two short weeks, 7 players have received and accepted D1 and D2 college scholarship offers. We would like to give a special thanks to all the players, parents, help, and colleges from Aug 16, it truly was a special day for us.

The scouting notes on all 14 Outfielders are now complete, lets take a look at what Aug 16th had roaming the outfield.

Jake Burlingame OF (Horseheads HS, NY 2016)

Burlingame stands 5-foot-10 170-pounds with an athletic build. From the OF he charges the ball with his glove down, fields to his glove side, uses a clean transfer, long arm action to a high ¾ slot. Shows above average arm strength topping 88 mph on his throws. Very projectable, smooth, and runs very athletic showing a 4.11 home to first time. At the plate he swings from the left side, he uses a back load on the pitch from a wide relaxed stance. He drives his hands inside the ball showing power potential with an exit velocity of 87. His bat path is level through the zone with long extension after contact to a high finish.

Zacary Granger OF (Horseheads HS, NY 2017)
Granger stands 6-foot-0 160-pounds with an athletic build. On the mound he throws from a high ¾ slot generating an 80-82 mph arm side run fastball. He throws a 69 mph curveball that has a small hump early, he needs to get on top of that pitch more and out in front on the release to get the hard late bite. He is very projectable because of this athleticism and quick hand speed (85 from OF). He needs to continue to develop and work on getting more extension on his pitches and finish.

Josh Loeffler OF (Fayetteville-Manlius HS, 2016)
Loeffler stands 5-foot-10 182 pounds and very athletic. From the outfield the University of Connecticut commit uses great baseball actions, stays behind the ball with his glove down, has a clean quick transfer, long arm action from a high ¾ arm slot at 84 mph. At the plate he sets up wide with his elbow up and tall. He uses a leg lift and back load for timing on the pitch, drives his hands inside the ball with power, 87 MPH exit velocity off a tee, slightly inclined bat path with long extension and a high finish.

Jordan Bernacet OF (Schenectady HS, 2015)
From the OF Bernacet uses prep steps to get to the ball, stays behind and fields low to his glove side. Uses an explosive crow hope, long arm action from a mid ¾ slot at 83 mph, he really gets his whole body into the throws with great extension and through his back side.

Jake Woodrich OF (Orchard Park HS, 2016)
Woodrich stands 5-foot-11 140-pounds with a frame that projects. From the OF he moves quick to the ball showing athleticism, proof during his home to first time which was 4.0. He fields the ball to his glove side with his glove out in front. Uses a high crow hop staying in line with his target, has a clean transfer to a long arm action, over the top slot at 81 mph getting his body through his throws on the finish. At the plate he bats from the left side with a wide stance and weight on his back side. On the pitch he uses a small leg lift and stride with a back load, hands stay inside the ball, bat path is slightly inclined through the zone, extension through contact and uses a one handed high finish.

Andrew Zink OF (Harrison HS, 2016)
Zink Stands 5-foot-10 170-pounds with an athletic build and room to grow. From the OF he moves hard to the ball, fields glove side, uses a clean quick transfer, crow hop for power and alignment stays true to his target, throws from an over the top slot at 81 mph with carry and a long extension.  At the plate he sets up slightly bent at the knees, hands high elbow slightly down, weight back. On the pitch he uses a back load, toe lift for timing before driving his hands inside the ball. Bat path Is level through the zone with plenty of speed at 87 off a tee.

Matt Carey OF (Webster Thomas HS, 2015)
Carey stands 6-foot-2 170-pounds with a projectable frame with a lot to like. He plays the outfield well and moves faster than his times suggest. He read a ball off the ball well in the game portion and made a diving superman catch in the gap showing great athleticism. He fields the ball glove side, uses a small crow hop for momentum and throws from a high ¾ slot, 81 mph, with a loose arm that projects more in the tank. At the plate he starts with a wide stance and weight shifted back. On the pitch he back loads and uses a small stride for timing, His bat path is long, hands cast some but bat stays level through the zone and shows consistent strong contact.

Matt Van Allen OF (West Genesee HS, 2015)
Van Allen stands 6-foot-3 215-pounds and has a lot to like in size and strength. From the OF he fields the ball on his glove side, shuffles his feet towards target and uses a long arm action to a high ¾ slot at 79 mph with some carry. If he focuses his efforts this winter on building arm strength good things could come this spring. At the plate he sets up wide with his weight back. On the pitch he uses a back load, hands drop some, bat path is long, plane is slightly inclined through the zone, he generates powerful bat speed at 87 mph off a tee, he uses long extension and a high finish.

Coby Brickner OF (Colonie HS, 2016)
Brickner stands 5-foot-11 145-pounds with room to grow. From the OF he stays behind the ball, uses both hands to field ball glove side, has a long arm action and throws from a high ¾ slot at 78 mph with some carry. At the plate he starts crouched down, hands low and balanced. On the pitch he back loads and strides for timing, bat path is a little long, and plane is on the incline with a shoulder height finish.

Nico Church OF (Herkimer CC, 2015)
Church stands 6-foot-4 190-pounds with an athletic baseball build. He moves quick to the ball fielding out in front to his glove side, uses a clean quick transfer, short arm action, throws from a high ¾ slot at 78 mph. That should be his No. 1 goal to improve his arm strength this off-season. At the plate he has a balanced wide approach. On the pitch he transfers his weight forward slightly, front foot moves some and he drives his hands forward powerfully at next level serious pop, 92 mph off a tee. His bat path is short to the ball, path is level through the zone with extension through contact and a high finish.

John Zamites OF (Olean HS, 2015)
Zamites stands 6-foot-0 180-pounds and solidly put together. In the outfield he move very quickly to the ball, evidence from his home to first time at 4.0 flat. He fields the ball outside his glove hand, transfers on the way up, uses a long arm action from a high ¾ slot at 76 mph. At the plate his setup is wide with his weight back, hands start low in middle of chest, load back on the pitch and uses a leg lift and stride for timing. He uses a short path to the ball, hands stay inside the baseball, bat plane is fairly level, extension through contact with a shoulder height one handed finish.

Sean Harris OF (Portville HS, 2016)
Harris stands 6-foot-1 165-pounds with a projectable frame. In the OF he fields the ball off his glove side, stands up before transfer, has a long arm action from a high ¾ slot at 75 mph arm strength. At the plate he hits from the right side, setup is wide and athletic, on the pitch he uses a back load and short stride for timing, his hands stay inside the ball and he has a pure, level, balanced swing with extension through contact and a high finish. Exit velocity was 84 off a tee.

Kurt Forsell OF (Shenendehowa HS, 2017)
Forsell stands 6-foot-0 157-pounds with a lot to like in his frame and projection. In the OF he fields the ball off of his glove side, has a clean transfer and crow hop that lines his body up with his target. Short arm action from a high ¾ slot at 75 mph arm strength with more in tank. At the plate he uses a back load with a short stride, short path to the baseball, hands stay inside the ball, long extension through contact to a shoulder height finish. Exit velocity was 79 mph.

Vincent Tomei OF (McQuaid Jesuit HS, 2015)
Tomei stands 5-foot-8 130-pounds with a slender build. In the OF he moves well, ran a 4.3 home to first, fields the ball in front of his glove side, stays quick with his transfer, short arm action to a mid/high ¾ slot at 74 mph but some carry. He gets his whole body through the ball on his throws. At the plate he starts with his legs close and knees bent, weight shifted forward and hands high. His path is long getting around the ball some, bat plane is level through the zone with extension through contact and a shoulder height finish. Bat exit velocity was 79 mph off a tee.
