Underclass Games Analysis: 3B Reports from Sept. 7th

Dan Cevette
Director, New York

The Underclass Prospect Games were a huge success, bringing young players together from all over New York. The exposure PBR gives is crucial for players trying to play baseball at the next level. We would like to give a special thanks to all the players, parents, help, and Horseheads HS for making Sept. 7th a truly special day for us.

The scouting notes on all 5 third basemen are now complete, lets take a look at what Sept 7th had at the corner.

Stephen Bennett 3B (Auburn HS, 2016)
Bennett stands 6-foot-0 180-pounds with a strong athletic build, and room to hold more. At the plate his setup is upright and relaxed. On the pitch he uses a back load, knee lift and stride before exploding his hands inside the ball. He shows next level hand and bat speed, confirmed by his right center bomb he hit in our sim game. His exit velocity was up to 91, his path to the ball is short and compact, bat plane is slightly inclined and he uses some extension through contact and a high finish. At 3B he fields the ball out in front, athletic, with smooth actions. His transfer and footwork are clean, arm action is a little long and front side needs to be stronger. Throws from a high 3/4 slot with above average arm strength at 84 mph. He also ran a 7.02 60 showing off his athleticism.

Frankie Pizzo 3B (Shenendehowa HS, 2016)

Pizzo stands 5-foot-9 175-pounds with a solidly built frame. At the plate he starts wide with some weight shifted on his back side and he keeps his hands high. On the pitch he uses a back load, heel lift and stride before driving his hands inside the ball with a short path. His bat plane is slightly inclined through the zone and his finish is shoulder height with some recoil. He shows signs of a powerful swing generating 84 mph off a tee exit velocity. At 3B he has smooth, clean actions to the ball, funnels the ball to his belt with a clean transfer. He uses a short arm action to a low 3/4 slot showing above average arm strength at 82 mph. Fun player to keep an eye on.

William Clifford RHP/3B (Charles W. Baker HS, 2016)

Clifford stands 6-foot-0 190-pounds and uses a good body size to stay behind the ball, with a mid-section transfer to a long arm action. He throws from a high 3/4 arm slot getting his entire body through the ball, arm strength was 79 mph with signs of more in the tank. With the bat his setup is tall with some weight shifted back. On the pitch he loads back, uses a small leg lift into a stride, powers his hands inside the ball with a short path, and slightly inclined bat plane through the strike zone. He uses a one handed shoulder height finish, exit velocity off a tee was 85 mph showing above average power potential.

Devon Lynch RHP/3B (Thomas A Edison)
At the plate he sets up balanced with some weight transferred back. On the pitch he uses a back load, no stride. His path to the ball is long, bat plane is uphill with a high finish. His exit velocity was 72 mph. At 3B he works hard to get behind the ball, needs more body control and balance, throws from a high 3/4 slot with 72 mph arm strength.

Ryan Hann RHP/3B (Williamsville South HS, 2017)
At the plate he starts upright, elbow up, bat on his shoulder. On the pitch he shifts his weight back, back load with hands, hands then go up before driving inside the ball, short path, bat plane is level through contact, shoulder height finish. His exit velocity off a tee was 74 mph. At 3B he fields the ball in the middle of this stance, bends at his back and needs to get low using his legs more, his transfer is out away from his body but clean, high arm action to a high 3/4 slot. Arm strength was 69 mph.
