Top Two-Way Players
RHP/1B- Grant Macciocchi (Moeller, 2015):
Tournament Performance: The Missouri commit was lights out in the Division I State Championship game. The hard-throwing righty went the distance (5 innings), allowing just three hits while shutting out a strong Westerville Central offense. Utilizing a fastball that got up to 91 MPH, the righty struck out four in the contest. At the plate, the future Tiger went 3-6, lacing two singles, a triple and a sac fly. The cleanup hitter for the D-I State Champion Crusaders scored a run and drove in a tournament high five runs.
RHP/SS- Shay Smiddy (Defiance, 2016):
Tournament Performance: The Louisville commit picked up a win and a save on the mound while leading the Division II State Champion Bulldogs. The righty went the distance in the semifinal win over Big Walnut allowing 1 run (in the 7th) on 6 hits and 4 walks while striking out 4. In the state title game the 6-foot-5 RHP got the final two outs for the save. At the plate, Smiddy went 4-7 with two singles, two doubles, two walks, two runs scored and two RBIs. Defensively at shortstop the junior was stellar, recording a tournament high eight assists including one of the top three web gems of the tournament, a diving stop toward 3rd and then a strike throw to 1st. To top it off, Smiddy won a title in basketball this winter to go along with this title.
LHP/OF- Patrick Murphy (Canton Central Catholic, 2015):
Tournament Performance: The Marshall commit recorded a win as well as a save on the hill to lead the way for the Division III State Champion Crusaders. The lefty was flat-out dominant in the semis, throwing a one-hitter while walking three. The southpaw also struck out nine while sitting in the mid-to-upper 80s with the fastball for the Crusaders. In the state title game, Murphy came in to get the final out of the game via strikeout. At the plate, the left-handed hitter went 1-4 with a double, walk, run scored and an RBI.
RHP/1B- Connor McMurry (Summit Country Day, 2017):
Tournament Performance: The sophomore was stellar on the mound in the semifinal win over Genoa. The right-handed pitcher went the distance allowing four runs (1 ER) on four hits and two walks. The super soph also struck out six. At the plate, the right-handed hitter went 3-6 with three singles and a hit-by-pitch. McMurry also scored a run while driving in four.
RHP/OF- Jake Greer (Hicksville, 2018):
Tournament Performance: The freshman started in right field for the Aces and went 2-3 in the semifinal loss to Berlin Center Western Reserve. The right-handed hitter had two singles and a walk. On the mound, this righty showed where his future lies, as the hard-throwing RHP came in relief allowing just one hit and a walk while striking out two in 1.1 innings of work.
Top Position Players
1st Base- Jimmy Bauer (Defiance, 2015):
Tournament Performance: The left-handed hitting 1st baseman showed off his power with two doubles and a triple while going 3-7 at the plate. Bauer also drew a walk, scored a run, drove in a run and stole a base. Bauer also played well defensively in helping lead the Division II State Champion Bulldogs to their second title in three years.
1st Base- Mitchell Meece (Moeller, 2015):
Tournament Performance: The unsigned senior went 2-3 at the plate with a single, double and three base on balls. The Crusaders 1st baseman also scored five runs, drove in three runs, hit a sacrifice fly and stole a base. Meece also played a solid 1st base defensively while helping lead Moeller to its 8th state title in school history.
2nd Base- Josh Hollander (Moeller, 2015):
Tournament Performance: The Kent State commit was outstanding offensively and defensively during the two games at Huntington Park. At the plate, the future Golden Flash went 3-6 with three singles and a walk while scoring three runs and driving in two. Defensively, the 2nd baseman was tied for the most assists in the tournament with eight while helping the Crusaders win the state title.
2nd Base- Jack Wallenburg (Newark Catholic, 2016):
Tournament Performance: The junior helped pace a Green Wave attack offensively while going 4-6 with four singles. The right-handed hitter also scored three runs while also driving in a run. Defensively, Wallenburg recorded three assists to help Newark Catholic claim the Division IV State Championship.
Shortstop- Kyle Dockus (Moeller, 2015):
Tournament Performance: The Wright State commit went 3-5 at the plate with three singles, a walk and a sacrifice fly. The future Raider scored two runs and drove in three as the Crusaders won their 8th State Championship in school history. Defensively, Dockus recorded four assists for the top-ranked team in the state.
3rd Base- Garrett "Boo" Sierra (Defiance, 2015):
Tournament Performance: The unsigned senior may have only had two hits in seven at-bats, but the right-handed hitter provided some power for the Division II State Champion Bulldogs. The athletic third baseman roped a single, double and a sac fly to help lead Defiance to another state crown. The sac fly was an interesting one as Sierra hit the ball all the way to the warning track in left-center field, allowing both runners from third and second base to score on the play. The unsigned senior also scored two runs, drove in three, had two stolen bases and recorded three assists.
OF- Wes Detter (Defiance, 2015):
Tournament Performance: The senior helped Defiance win a state title in the winter in basketball and played a pivotal part on the diamond in the spring. The right-handed hitter went 4-8 with three singles and a double to help lead Defiance in its D-II State Championship run. The right-fielder also drew a walk, scored two runs and stole two bases.
OF- J.C. Colangelo (Canton Central Catholic, 2016):
Tournament Performance: The junior helped Canton Central Catholic claim a Division III State Title as this 9-hole hitter stepped up on the biggest stage of them all. Colangelo went 4-6 with four singles while also scoring two runs, driving in a run and stealing a base.
OF- Sam Fuller (Cleveland St. Ignatius, 2015):
Tournament Performance: The unsigned senior did his part as he saw his team, St. Ignatius, bow out of the tournament in the state semifinals. The lead-off hitter went 3-3 with three singles and a walk. Fuller scored a run, drove in two, drew a walk and also stole two bases.
Just missed the cut
2nd Base- Ryan Demsky (Western Reserve, 2018) - Went 3-4 with three singles, one run scored, one RBI, a walk and also recorded four assists for the D-IV State runner-up Blue Devils.
3rd Base- Mark Peterson (Summit Country Day, 2015) - Went 3-6 with a single, two doubles, two runs scored, an RBI and also recorded three assists for the D-III State runner-up Silver Knights.
Outfielder- Kyle Butz (Moeller, 2016) - Went 3-6 with two singles, a double, two runs scored and two stolen bases for the D-I State Champion Crusaders. All three Moeller outfielders could have made the All-Tournament team, but with so many Crusaders to choose from some had to miss the cut.
Outfielder- Jordan Ramey (Moeller, 2015) - The lightning-quick center fielder, a Cincinnati commit, went 3-5 with two singles, a double, a walk, three runs scored, two RBIs and three stolen bases for the D-I State Champion Crusaders.
Outfielder- Eric Conner (Moeller, 2015) - The Walsh commit had 3 hits in 7 at-bats with three singles, two runs scored, two RBIs and three stolen bases for the D-I State Champion Crusaders.
Outfielder- Lucas Blackerby (Canton Central Catholic, 2016) - The CCC 8-hole hitter went 3-5 with three singles, a run scored and a walk for the D-III State Champion Crusaders.
Outfielder/pitcher- John Clegg (Berlin Center Western Reserve, 2015) - Went 3-6 with two singles, a triple, a run scored and two RBIs for the D-IV State Runner-up Blue Devils. Clegg also earned the save in the semifinal game and went the distance in the finale allowing 3 earned runs.
Top Pitchers
RHP- Gavin Lyon (Westerville Central, 2016):
Tournament Performance: The Ohio State commit was stellar on the mound in the state semifinal win over St. Ignatius. The righty went 5.1 innings allowing four runs (two ER) on 9 hits and a walk while striking out an impressive 12 batters.
LHP- Nick Bennett (Moeller, 2016):
Tournament Performance: The Louisville commit was dominant on the mound in the semifinal win over Aurora. The southpaw went the distance, allowing one run on four hits and a walk while striking out five to help lead the Crusaders to the state title game.
RHP- Michael Hendricks (Defiance, 2015):
Tournament Performance: The Miami Ohio commit got the win in the state title game in Division II over Poland Seminary and looked outstanding while doing so. The flame-thrower went 6.1 innings, allowing three runs (two ER) on six hits and three walks while striking out seven..
RHP- Jared Burkert (Poland Seminary, 2016):
Tournament Performance: The junior had one of the top performances on the mound for any pitcher in the semifinals. The righty went the distance in Poland's win over Bishop Watterson, allowing just two hits while shutting out the Eagles. The righty also struck out eight without walking a batter.
RHP- Jake Vance (Canton Central Catholic, 2016):
Tournament Performance: The Ohio State commit picked up the win on the mound in the Division III State Championship game over Summit Country Day. The junior right-hander went 6.2 innings, allowing two runs (one ER) on six hits and two walks. The hard-thrower struck out an impressive 10 batters in the title game.
RHP- Rob Engle (Newark Catholic, 2015):
Tournament Performance: The Muskingum commit picked up the win on the mound in the Division IV State Championship game over Berlin Center Western Reserve. The crafty right-hander went the distance while shutting out the Blue Devils. Engle gave up just three hits and two walks while striking out seven. The righty also pitched in relief in the semifinal win over Fort Recovery, going one inning, allowing a walk while striking out two.
RHP- Wyatt Larimer (Berlin Center Western Reserve, 2017):
Tournament Performance: The sophomore came up big against Hicksville in the semifinals, picking up the win and allowing the Blue Devils to advance to the state title game. The right-handed pitcher went five strong innings, allowing just three hits and two walks while striking out an impressive 10 Aces.
RHP- Gabe Morris (Newark Catholic, 2015):
Tournament Performance: The Capital commit picked up the win on the mound in the state semifinal contest against Fort Recovery. The righty went six strong shutout innings, allowing eight hits and a walk while striking out three to help lead the Green Wave into the state title game.
Just missed the cut
Jackson Hobbs (Fort Recovery, 2016) - Was the tough-luck loser in the semifinal against the eventual state champion Newark Catholic Green Wave. The righty went the distance allowing four runs (one ER) on seven hits, while walking one. The three-hole hitter also went 2-4 at the plate.
Sam Rice (Bishop Watterson, 2015) - The Ashland commit was the hard-luck loser against Poland. The righty went 6.2 innings, allowing just two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out six in a 2-0 defeat.
Wade Martin (Wheelersburg, 2015) - The Marshall commit lost to the eventual state champs in D-III, Canton Central Catholic, but threw well. The righty went the distance, allowing three runs (one ER) on six hits and a walk while striking out four.
2015 OHSAA Tournament Co-MVP's
The 2015 State tournament was all about dominating pitching performances, stellar defense by the state champions and clutch hitting 1-9 by the four teams that got to hold up the championship trophy. That being said, in 2015 we have a three-way tie for MVP with Moeller's Grant Macciocchi, Defiance's Shay Smiddy and Canton Central Catholic's Patrick Murphy. All three future Division I athletes displayed brilliance on the mound, at the plate and in the field.
