Drew Collins OF / OF / Oregon Clay, OH / 2020

OREGON - Like many youngsters, Drew Collins thought about college baseball as part of his future.

“Since I was a little kid I dreamed of playing at the next level and I’ve been taking the steps to get there,” the Clay junior said. “It’s motivated me and drove me to improve myself.”

But what schools might take notice in the 6-2 165-pound left-handed hitting outfielder was uncertain, even to Collins.

“I was at a tournament and got a text from coach (Jordan) Chiero,” explained Collins, in reference to PBR Ohio’s Director of Scouting. “He said the Purdue coach wanted me to call. I was sitting with my dad and it shocked me. I didn’t expect such a big school. It was then I thought ... this is it.”

Suddenly, the recruiting process was in motion for the 47th-ranked 2020 in Ohio, who went on a visit to the Big 10 campus in West Lafayette, Ind.

“It was beautiful,” Collins said. “The atmosphere was great, the coaches were great. It was like meeting friends I always knew. It was awesome.”

But a learning experience as well.

“I was extremely nervous, I didn’t know what to expect,” Collins admitted. “I wasn’t expecting to jump right into Division I, so I kind of felt my way through it. Everything clicked.”

The 11th-rated junior outfielder in Ohio is looking at a possible visit to Toledo in the future with Cincinnati, Wright State and Ball State others that have been in contact.

“Ohio Elite helped with a lot of exposure and PBR as well,” pointed out Collins, who participated in four PBR events in 2018 including the Top Prospect Games and Southern Prospect Games in June and the TPG at Wright State in August.

“Jordan Chiero helped a lot from a recruiting aspect,” Collins said. “He lets me know what they’re saying.”
