Mayfield Makes Quick Work of New Albany

When Mayfield (6-1) formed their schedule, they couldn’t have anticipated a trip to Columbus would have started with an undefeated New Albany Eagles squad.

Regardless, the Wildcats embraced the challenge and came out swinging.

In the top of the first, Mayfield struck quickly as they put four runs on the board against New Albany starting pitcher Andrew Schneider.

Ray Guerrini, an Air Force recruit, delivered a key RBI single as a part of his 3 for 3 day at the plate, which also included 4 RBI, a run, and a stolen base.

Aided by sloppy New Albany defense, the Wildcats continued to pour it on with 3 runs in the second inning.

Seniors Larry Pinto and Cory Nager reached base on singles and standout junior Mitch Longo added an triple and RBI.

Longo, who shows a strong, athletic frame, is a talented hitter from the left side and a definite follow in the Class of 2013.

Pinto, who plays first base for the Wildcats, collected 4 hits on the day along with 4 RBI and a stolen base.

Senior Anthony Matticoli threw two and two-thirds of shutout baseball before turning it over to the bullpen.

New Albany tried to put together a comeback in the 4th and 5th innings.

Senior Shane Kriss delivered an RBI double. The Eagles’ efforts were also aided by a throwing error by shortstop Cory Nager, which brought in two runs.

Eventually, the Wildcats called upon sophomore southpaw John Schreiber. The soft tossing lefty kept the Eagles off balance with a 75-78 mph fastball, a 65-66 curveball, and a 59-60 mph changeup.

Schreiber’s changeup, which shows good fade and is thrown with excellent arm action, kept the Eagles off balance and eventually closed the door for a five-inning, 14-4 route.
