No Fantasy Here, Dream Becomes Reality For Thwaits

Nick Thwaits RHP / Fort Recovery, OH / 2018

PEORIA, Ariz. - In seventh grade, a guidance counselor asked Nick Thwaits what he wanted to be when he grew up.

“I always dreamed of being a pro baseball player,” Thwaits responded.

A fantasy for most has become a reality.

“Look at me now … it’s crazy,” admitted Thwaits, now a member of the San Diego Padres’ organization. “It’s always been my dream.”

The thought became closer to a realization back in February.

“I went to the (PBR) Super 60 and after that event I began to realize it was a possibility,” Thwaits explained. “It showed this could happen.”

It not only could .. but did, with Thwaits becoming the first graduate from Fort Recovery to be drafted since the 1950s.

“We talked with the Padres the most, and they said I could potentially go in the fourth or fifth round,” the third-ranked player in Ohio’s 2018 class reflected. “When it got to day three I didn’t know what to expect. It was definitely nerve-wracking, but something I’ll never forget.”

The selection came in the 15th round with the 441st pick.

“I was with my parents,” Thwaits reflected. “I was on the phone with my advisor trying to figure out what was going to happen and he says ‘dude, you just got drafted.’ After that there were a lot of hugs with family and calling those closest to me.”
