PBR Mailbag: Talking GPA, Phone Calls And Emails

By Nathan Rode

The draft is about a month away and there’s no shortage of buzz to talk about. As noted by Sean Duncan, LHP Jake Latz (Lemont HS, IL) is heating up despite a late start, as is RHP Jayce Vancena (Lake HS, OH). RHP Jeremy Randolph (Miamisburg HS, OH) has also been getting some attention after going from mid-80s velocity last summer to low 90s this spring. I will be traveling to Ohio on Tuesday in hopes of seeing Randolph, RHP/1B Zack Shannon (Anderson HS, OH) and RHP Cameron Varga (Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, OH) on back-to-back-to-back days.

On to your questions for this week…there were a few questions regarding recruiting scenarios so I made sure to get info from the best source possible, Kansas scouting director Sean McCann, who is a former Division I recruiting coordinator.

How much does GPA help in getting a Division I scholarship? If a "high follow" player has a 3.0, but a "high/good follow" has a 3.8+, who would they take?
If you're not already, be sure to keep up with Recruiting Essentials. McCann is the mastermind behind it and I turned this question over to him. He says, all things being equal, they will most likely take the higher GPA. As he put it, "it screams low maintenance."
