PBR Spotlight Game: No. 2 Mason at Sycamore

By Matt Wallisa

It was definitely a one sided affair tonight between the Mason Comets and the Sycamore Aviators at Sycamore Field in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Comets started junior ace Andrew McDonald to face the Aviators.

The 6-foot-5 junior right-hander mixed speeds throughout his 3 innings of work. His fastball topped out at 87 mph. His breaking ball sat around 76-77 mph.

While he was efficient in his first two innings of work, the junior ran into issues in the the third inning.  The speed on his fastball went down and the Sycamore hitters jumped on it. He also was falling behind hitters in the 3rd inning of the game, which ended up resulting in three walks in the inning. Also two errors in the inning didn’t help the matter.  The Aviators got across six runs in the inning, four of them being earned runs on Andrew McDonald.

The highlights for the Aviators were limited as the bats of Mason took over the game in every way possible. The Comets had two really big innings in the 2nd and 4th innings of the game. They ended up scoring twelve of their 29 runs in the 2nd inning of the game. Leading the Comets offensively was junior Connor McVey, who went 4 for 4 at the plate.

The key to the game was the plate patience and discipline of the Mason hitters. They continued to battle and wait for their pitch throughout the entire night. The Comets were fundamentally sound and ran the bases well, capitalizing on passed balls and mistakes from the Sycamore players to get runners into scoring position.

The Comets looked to junior pitcher Seth Bowles to finish the victory off for them. He came in and had a 1, 2, 3 inning to give the Comets a 29-7 victory.

The two teams will match up again Wednesday at Mason High School.
