PBR Spotlight Game: Thomas Worthington vs Worthington Kilbourne

Worthington– Thomas Worthington battles back in dramatic fashion to defeat crosstown rival Worthington Kilbourne 7-5 in non-conference action. 

The visiting Kilbourne Wolves would jump out to an early lead in the top half of the first inning, when unsigned senior, Dominic Brown, knocked in Dominic Frengel with an RBI single to right field. 

In the second inning, both teams traded runs when Kilbourne’s Hyatt Shenefield scored on a Colton Hahn single. The Cardinals responded with a Joey Pischel RBI single.

Coach Boulware and the Wolves extended their lead in the top of the fourth when Brock Wadja would reach on an error and scored later on a Ryan McDaniel single.

With a 3-1 advantage, Kilbourne looked to blow the game wide open, as they had a bases loaded opportunity spoiled when unsigned senior, Jace Komminsk came into relieve starter Andy Burpee and induced a pop fly by Drew George.

Junior, Anthony Falks led-off the bottom half of the fourth for Thomas Worthington with a single, followed by Pischel reaching on an error. The Cards were now if striking distance as Brady Roesch (Ohio Wesleyan commit) hit a 2-run single to tie the game at 3-3. 

After a scoreless fifth frame, the Wolves would once again top the scoreboard in the sixth inning, when Nick Hill and Brown both reached base on walks and crossed the plate on a George single for a 5-3 advantage. 

Down, but not out once again, the Cards had four straight hitters reach base. A Jaret Gerber single, Komminsk walk, Alec MacDonnell hit by pitch and a John Lee fielder’s choice. 

After plating one run, Trent Castle came with the big blow, as he hit a 3-run bomb to give the Cardinals their first lead of the game at 7-5

Komminsk would throw a scoreless seventh inning to earn the victory in relief. 

The game has numerous scoring opportunities for both team as Kilbourne would leave 11 runners on base and the Cardinals left a total of 10 ducks on the pond.

Thomas Worthington was led offensively with three extra base hits by a Castle homer, a Lee triple and a Komminsk double. With an improved record of (6-7) will next take on OCC foe Marysville. 

Paced by Dominic Brown’s 2-2 day including to walks and a run scored, the Wolves drop to (8-4) overall and will take on Franklin Heights this Monday.
