Q and A with Transylvania Commit Matt Birkenhauer (Anderson)

Matt Birkenhauer

PBR: Why did you choose Transylvania?

I like the small school atmosphere as well as the location and that I can play baseball right away. I attended the prospect camp they held in the fall and got to meet some players as well as interact with the coaches. I also did an overnight visit shortly after. I loved the superior academics as well as the state of the art workout facilities.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Wittenberg, Marietta, Bellarmine and Georgetown.  My final two choices were Wittenberg and Transylvania.

PBR: Where did Transylvania first see you compete?

Coach Revelette, the pitching coach came down to Eastern Kentucky University where I was pitching in a fall tournament. He invited me to come watch their intrasquad scrimmage and meet Coach Campbell right after my game.

PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play during your first year on campus?

They expect for me to come in and play my freshman year. I will be ready in any role that I am needed.

PBR: What is your biggest strength as a player and how do you feel that will help Transy?

I feel that my biggest strength as a player is my patience and ability to keep my cool on the mound.  I just turned 17 in August so I believe I will continue to grow and get stronger.  I also have the ability to locate the ball and throw strikes.

PBR: Who do you play for during the summer and what was your most exciting experience?

I play for the Cincinnati Bulldogs. The most exciting experience for me was getting to pitch on University of Dayton’s field in the Wright State University Tournament this past summer. I also  pitched for Team Ohio in Chicago over the summer.

PBR: Who is the toughest batter you have faced in Ohio?

David Morton, he plays for our rival Turpin High School and recently committed to Xavier University.

PBR: What are your goals both individually and for the team going into your senior season?

My individual goals are to pitch in as many games as possible and win or save as many as possible. My goals for the team are to win our conference and go on to win the State Championship.

PBR: What were your stats last season?

I had an undefeated high school season.  I went 8-1 over the summer for the Cincinnati Bulldogs with 54 strikeouts in 49 innings. In the 2011 Champions Fall Elite League I had a 1.23 ERA and struck out 17 in 22 innings.
