Scouting Notes: Alter at Carroll

By Roger Janeway

Alter Scouting Notes:

  • Junior right-handed pitcher Ryan Annett started for Alter on the mound. His fastball velocity sat 81-84 mph with feel & spin of curveball. Competed well and projects as D-2 type hurler.
  • Junior shortstop Zach Reboulet showed good hands and lateral movement defensively with playable college arm. Had balanced swing, but will need to improve below average foot speed (4.6 to 1st).
  • Senior first baseman Pete Ballard has some pop from left side. Hits with open stance but squares front side. Shows some approach. Displays versatlity to also play second base or third base. Good D-2 to NAIA player.
  • Senior right-handed pitcher Jason Reboulet and Junior right-handed pitcher Alex Nikolai did not pitch.

Carroll Scouting Notes

  • Team has a good crew of underclassmen players that have matured this year while playing many of the top teams from Cincinnati.
  • Sophomore catcher Tony Quatman is a strong bodied (R-R, 5'10, 190) receiver with good raw skills. He runs well and shows solid average arm strength. Has very quick hands and bat into hitting zone. Would like to see enhancement of backside load. Good catching ability. Blocks well with good release (2.0 pop). Solid future D-1 receiver.
  • Sophomore center fielder John Rutan (R-R, 5'10, 160) is an excellent defensive player with solid gap to gap range and good arm strength. Can easily project him to be D-1 outfielder. Shows good foot speed. Displays good offensive swing as he gets barrel of bat on ball and uses the whole field as a contact type guy.
  • Junior second baseman Patrick Raiff (L-R, 5'9, 165) is a fire-plug type player with excellent plus grade footspeed (4.1 to 1st). Has playable arm which limits him to 2B but also would be team's CF if not for Rutan. Raiff has a quick flat plane swing which produce line drives to all fields.
  • Sophomore left-handed pitcher Tyler Seymour (L-L, 6'0, 155) is a good rhythm type pitcher with excellent feel and spin of curveball that "jelly-legs" a lefty hitter along with a changeup that shows some fade. Excellent pitchability. FB 76-79 mph now, can see him being up to mid 80's guy as a senior.
