Vancena ranked as one of the top pitchers at Ohio’s Winter Top Prospect Showcase in December 2011 and he has steadily progressed on the mound. At that event, Vancena’s fastball sat 79-82 and his curveball barely broke 60 mph. Two years later, Vancena stands at 6-foot-4, 210 pounds and can reach the low 90s with his fastball. At a showcase put on by Rockies area scout Ed Santa last fall, Vancena sat 90-91 with good downward plane. He then sat 87-90 at the World Wood Bat Championship in Jupiter, FL, with a solid curveball in the mid 70s.
