Wissman Will Be Staying Close To Home

DAYTON - After Nick Wissman pitched Chaminade-Julienne to a state baseball championship last June, the right-hander expected colleges to finally jump on board.

But that never happened.

“The only things I got out of the state experience were invites to showcases,” noted Wissman, who threw a four-hitter in a 3-1 win over Wapakoneta in the Division II state finals, fanning nine and not permitting an earned run. “I would have thought I would get something … but the interest never came around.”

Flash ahead a few months and he was already into his senior year of high school. Wissman considered the possibility that he might not play at the next level.

“It was definitely on my mind,” the 63rd-rated 2019 in Ohio admitted. “This is stuff that usually gets done junior year.”

Determined to get noticed, Wissman went to a pitching camp at the University of Dayton in October.

“For more than a year now I’ve wanted to go to UD for academics,” Wissman said. “College baseball has always been a dream, and if somebody would give me a chance I wanted to do it.”

The camp went well for the top-ranked unsigned senior in the state.

“It was my first time in front of their coaches,” the 6-1 170-pounder reflected. “I was invited back for another camp and I figured I’d take a chance and give it a shot. My numbers jumped the next time and I hit 90 for them. That’s when their interest picked up.”

An offer and commitment eventually happened.

“They like my upside … what I already have with my stuff and what I’m able to build on,” Wissman explained about Dayton. “Strength-wise I have a lot of room to grow. I can be as good as I want to be, it depends on how much work I put in. I think the potential I have, along with what I already have now, is what they liked.”

That is quite a change from a year ago when college interest in Wissman was non-existent.
