Wright State The Best Option From The Beginning For Valentine

MEDINA - The first turned out to be the best for Joey Valentine.

“One of the things that stood out was it seemed coach Sogard really believed in me, and coach Metzger,” Valentine said in reference to Wright State head coach Alex Sogard and recruiting coordinator Nate Metzger. “They were actually the first college to contact me. That went into the decision. They were the first to reach out and to believe I can go to that level.”

There was more that stood out in helping the incoming senior at Medina make the decision to commit to the Horizon League school that has participated in the NCAA Tournament seven times since 2006.

“Coach Sogard has really built an atmosphere of best student-athletes,” the 12th-rated 2022 left-handed pitcher in the state said.

Connecting with coaches at Wright State came with help from the opposition.

“I started talking to them last fall,” Valentine reflected. “I was a pitcher and an opposing coach reached out to Wright State and my coach. That coach (Gus Gregory of Release) had a Wright State commit on his team and that was how it got started. That was how they found me.”

The relationship grew from that point on.

“What they liked about me were the tools I have,” the 6-1 170-pound southpaw related. “During the winter I grew 15 to 20 pounds and really increased my velocity. That really helps my projectability. I’ve been working on my mechanics and they really like how hard I work at it. My work ethic stands out, plus how much I like to compete.”

That drive has the 52nd-ranked 2022 in Ohio continuing to improve.

“Besides a velocity jump I feel like I’ve been improving my offspeed and making it to be more consistent,” Valentine noted. “I’m getting my walks down and throwing more strikes in general.”

It brought attention to MAC schools, Xavier and “briefly with a Power Five” school during the recruiting process before Wright State won out.

“I went there during the fall break,” Valentine said about a visit to the university located three hours from his Medina home. “It was difficult with covid, but I had a road map with what to check out. I saw the baseball field and the classrooms and liked everything. The campus is really nice.”

It helped make a decision for Valentine, whose interest in playing college baseball began only recently.

“The summer of my sophomore year of high school was when I began to feel I had the tools,” Valentine explained. “I just had to put in the work, and it seemed to pay off. Now I just need to keep getting better.”

There was plenty of help along the way for the hard-throwing left-hander, the fifth Wright State commit from Ohio’s 2022 class.

“My pitching coach is one of the biggest people to help me,” Valentine pointed out about Ryan Bores. “He knows a lot about recruiting and he pitched at Kent State and for the Rangers up to class AAA. He really knows the game. He helped me with the mentality stuff and what to pitch where.

“I also worked out with a coach that helped me with a good regimen for lifting,” Valentine added in reference to lifting instructor Ryan Hart. “That really helped with my growth.”

Potential majors in college include sports science and physical therapy for Valentine, a 3.8 student who believes he will be a major asset to the program at Wright State.

“I’m a guy that will compete for you and throw strikes,” Valentine said. “I’ll be a competitor and overall just help the team in general.”

The feeling of being committed, admittedly, brings relief according to the Medina 17-year-old.

“There was a lot of excitement to be verbally committed to college,” Valentine concluded. “I’m really resolved. Now that the process is over I can just go out and play and work to get better.”
