Q and A with 2012 Ohio University Commit Alex Corna

Alex Corna, a 2012 recruit from Lakota East, has committed to Ohio University. Corna, who played a big role in Lakota East's Division I State Championship run, recently provided insight into his recruiting process and development as a player.

PBR: What schools were you considering?

Corna: I considered Michigan State, Ohio State, Xavier, Cincinnati, Miami, Bradley, Creighton, Wright State, and Ohio U.

PBR: Why did you choose Ohio University?

Corna: I chose Ohio U because it was the best campus that I visited. My parents both went there as well as 2 uncles and an aunt.

PBR: What position/role does Coach Carbone expect you to play?

Corna: Coach Carbone said that I would play a corner outfield spot and bat in the middle of the lineup.

PBR: What is your biggest strength as a player and how do you feel that you will help OU?

Corna: I am a left handed power hitter. The coaches tell me that the wind is always blowing out toward right at Ohio U. That fits right into my strength.

PBR: Are you trying to help recruit any other players to join you?

Corna: Yes. One of my teammates may be committing very soon.

PBR: How was the Cincy Flames program helped your development as a player?

Corna: The Cincy Flames have played one of the strongest schedules in the midwest. I have played with and against players better than me for years. It has forced me to get better and compete. The coaching in the organization is the best.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?

Corna: My brother David.

PBR: With your brother having gone through the recruiting process, what sort of advice has he given you about the recruiting process and about the future grind of college baseball?

Corna: He told me to go where they showed the most interest and where I would have a chance to play right away. David red shirted and waited 3 years to play. It has worked out great for him. He loves college baseball and never considers it a grind.

PBR: What were your stats for this spring season at Lakota East?

Corna: 21 runs, 32 hits, 6 doubles, 2 triples, 2 home runs, 23 rbi, .532 OBP, .391 avg

PBR: When the last out was made at Huntington Park for the Division I state championship, what were your immediate thoughts?  How has that experienced stacked up in your young baseball career?

Corna: I thought about my teammates. About how hard we worked. The 5:00 am workouts. Going to practice 6 days a week in the winter either weight lifting, batting cages, or long tossing. Nobody else in the city worked as hard as us in the off season and it was worth it.

PBR: What advice would you to give to current and future recruits having to make their college selection?

Corna: Play for a great summer program. The coaches and scouts know who the better organizations are. They know who plays the best competition. They attend those games. You have to be seen. Then select a college where you can play and contribute.
