2018 Ontario Youth Team - The Catchers
Baseball Ontario has announced the Ontario Youth Roster, which will represent the province at the Canada Cup taking place August 8th through 12th in Moncton, New Brunswick. The Canada Cup is a premier 17U tournament and features teams from each province competing for the national championship. Ontario’s roster was announced after the completion of the 40-man tryout this past week in Vaughan, which featured 40 players vying for one of the final 20 roster spots. Below is an in depth look at the catchers with notes from the tryouts and what could be when the Canada Cup kicks off.
THE CATCHERS
George Cuthbert C / 1B / Richview, ON / 2019Rankings StateRank: 64 / POS: 9
Report: The Etobicoke Rangers product performed well during the tryout both at the plate and behind it. Swinging from the left side, the 6-foot-2 Cuthbert generates power from a big leg kick and smooth hand load. There is bat speed present and the ball explodes off his bat. The swing has calmed down since last season, resulting in more consistent barreled contact and better balance. There is present raw power and more should come with further swing development. Behind the plate, he moves well for his size and the arm continues to improve. He benefits from a quiet setup and the strength he possesses. Cuthbert may also see some time at first base during the trip along with the other three catchers. |
