PBR Canada Collegiate Performers of the Week

Every week, we'll highlight one hitter and one pitcher to be our PBR Canada Collegiate Players of the Week which is powered by Mizuno. This is the 13th week and we have two fresh faces who went off for their respective programs in Carter Arbuthnot and Travis Keys.

THE OFFENSIVE SIDE

Hitter of the Week
Carter Arbuthnot, Erie Community College

Background: With Carter Arbuthnot coming out of the Oshawa Legionnaires program, PBR Ontario saw plenty of the 6-foot, 185-pound shortstop middle infielder before he joined Erie CC in the fall of 2019. Arbuthnot has always impressed with his glove and actions up the middle and he’s answered any questions about his bat during his time in Erie. Arbuthnot was also a part of  Ontario’s 2018 Canada Cup team that claimed gold.  Last year as a true freshman he batted .304 with a .484 OBP and has improved on that this year with a slash line of .354/.432/.524.

Performance: On Sunday Arbuthnot had a day some can only dream of as he blasted four home runs in a doubleheader against Jamestown CC. Throughout the entirety of the four-game set, Arbuthnot went 9-for-12 with four home runs, eight runs scored, 12 RBI and two walks. As a covid freshman, the former Legionnaires’ bat should have no issue contributing to a four-year school’s lineup, whether that’s next year or the following year.

STAT LINE: 4 games played… 9-for-12, 4 HR, 8 R, 12 RBI, 2BB

ON THE MOUND

Pitcher of the Week
Travis Keys, Aquinas College

Background: Another Ontario player to receive honours this week, we saw a little bit of Travis Keys back in 2015-2016 with the London Badgers as a two-way player. Keys originally attended Lake Michigan JC in 2016-2017 where led the pitching staff in innings and threw four complete games. That same year he slugged .292/.362/.625 over 72 at-bats and led the team in home runs  slugging. Now as a junior at Aquinas College, Keys has really broken out as a premiere pitcher in the conference.

Performance: This weekend marked the second time in Keys’ past three starts that he picked up 16 strikeouts, although he reached that mark in two less innings this time around. Over seven innings, Keys allowed just one run, although it was unearned, while allowing five hits, two walks and striking out 16. With no runs from the offence, Keys was stuck with the loss although he dropped his season ERA to 2.72.

STAT LINE: 7 innings pitched… 5 H, 1 R (0 ER), 2 BB, 16 K
