Ontario Top Ten Breakdown: Top Viewed Prospect Profiles - #3 Josh Naylor
#3 Josh Naylor, 1B, 2015 (Miami Marlins 1st Round)
Background: First round, 12th overall... That was when Josh Naylor made Canadian baseball history as the highest position player ever selected in the MLB draft. He was a main focus for scouts around the province since he was 14 years old and from the start was given a large set of expectations from baseball people around North America. He easily met those and went beyond. Naylor performed at every level, on every stage. MVP awards, all star game selections, Under Armour games etc.. He was there and stood out, which only a few players at that level seem to do and separate themselves from the rest of the pack. He has tremendous power from the left side with a knack for hitting, not a boom or bust type hitter. He’ll use the whole field, take what you give him, and burn you for any mistake. Stories will be passed down about particular home runs, and one of the most impressive batting practices rounds I've seen with my own eyes, and I have witnessed some pretty good ones from Chris Carter to Carlos Gonzalez and Willy Mo Pena. He is a special type of player. The intangibles, confidence, passion, attitude are all there for him to be successful player for a long long time.
Minor League Update: Naylor battled mono in his first year of professional ball for the Miami Marlins, but that did not stop him from hitting when he was healthy. He appeared in 25 games for Miami in the Gulf Coast Rookie League, 19 at first base and six as the designated hitter. In 98 at-bats, Naylor had 32 hits, 16 RBIs, an average of .327, and OPS of .771. Though he only hit one home run, we expect Naylor has not lost his power stroke, and that come 2016 he has a chance to be one of the top home run leaders in his league, if not the entire MILB. As a baseball enthusiast, Naylor is someone who you have no complaints about paying to see, and make sure you get there early for BP as well.
