updated 2022 ontario rankings

As we head into the New Year, we have updated the 2022 rankings in Ontario and there's a lot of familiar faces in the rankings but there has been some shuffling, as well as new players who made their way onto the scene in the crazy year of 2021 we all endured.

Although there wasn't a ton of national events that we're used to seeing like the Canada Cup, Ray Carter Cup, Junior National Team and others, Ontario was still able to do a great job of getting players on the field and giving them the most opportunity as possible.

We highlight some of the players throughout the rankings and give some insight and up to date information.

at the top

Turner Spoljaric
Spoljaric made his name known this season across the circuit while also putting on the Canadian jersey for the first time this summer. The right-hander,  who is now an Oregon commit is a three-pitch arm who has worked in the low 90’s and will be in the strike the majority of time with his entire repertoire. It’s athletic on the mound and although he is one of the older players in the class, there is still upside and projection that comes with Spoljaric.

Sam White
White was in Florida all summer with his club team the Ontario Blue Jays and the reps have looked to pay off when we saw him with the National Team this fall as Whites’ hit tool was on full display. The West Virginia commit saw time at 3rd and behind the plate, but it was the bat that caught our attention. There is rhythm and balance from start to finish with White and he likes to work gap to gap with minimal swing and miss.

Nate Ochoa
Ochoa is another player who is older in the class but the size, strength and just pure physicality he brings is something that stands out right away. Ochoa recently committed to Alabama and the shortstop provides a lot of ability on both sides of the ball. There is raw power as Ochoa can leave any ball park while the actions and arm strength are there to stay on the left side of the infield whether that be shortstop or third base is still to be determined.

new faces

With new rankings comes new faces and there are a couple that move into the top ten heading into 2022.

Hugh Pinkney and Dylan O’Rae are left-handed bats that see their stocks rise after strong fall campaigns. Pinkney brings a lot of value with his defensive abilities behind the plate and the upside in the bat. O’Rae may very easily be the fastest player in the class and shows a lot of bat to ball contact while the speed really plays on the bases.

Another left-handed hitter in the top ten, and a familiar face is Utah commit Cam Gurney. Gurney had some struggles with the bat early in the summer but turned it around late in the fall to finish strong. The power is real and expect for Gurney to come out in 2022 with a purpose to his game.

On the mound, teammates Zak Szabo and Jonah Tong find themselves in the top ten after strong showings this past fall. Both have fastballs that will run in the low 90s while Szabo uses a slider and Tong has the feel and ability to spin an overhand curveball. Each of them were standouts at the Unsigned Senior games in PA this summer.

The others in the top ten are left-handed pitcher and Nebraska commit Caleb Clark while the bat of Chipola  commit Jacob Miller comes in at the No. 10 spot to round out the top ten in our rankings. Clark is a pitchability lefty who changes speeds and uses all quadrants of the zone extremely well while the power potential of Miller is just something you can't ignore.

The top ten is definitely a talented group from the 2022 class here in Ontario and that is just where it starts.

Stay locked in as we continue to talk about and give you insight on the entire 2022 class over the next week.
