Ontario Scout Blog: June's Standouts

Cam Black-Araujo
Assistant Director, Prep Baseball Canada

The summer season continues to roll along as teams are now making trips south of the border for tournaments and the chance to get infront of college coaches. There's been tons of action across the province as we're now in the thick of summer with some 2024 MLB Draft prospects taking the field, both in Canada and the US, and our staff has been there to take in all the action.

With another month of game coverage now behind us, our Assistant Director of Canada, Cam Black-Araujo, breaks down some of the players and prospects who caught his eye over the past four weeks.

+ ‘24 RHP Josiah Romeo (Trenton Thunder/Florida St.): Josiah Romeo is Canada’s top HS draft-eligible arm and has been dominant during his stint in the MLB Draft League with his fastball sitting in the 90-92mph range while touching some 93s and 94s. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound right-hander has yet to allow a walk over three outings (9.1 IP) while picking up 11 strikeouts. Currently owns a 1.93 ERA, along with a 0.86 WHIP. The HPP Tigers product has utilized a pair of secondary offerings with a slider at 81-83mph and changeup at 80-82mph. Had three whiffs on the slider and three whiffs on the changeup with our staff in attendance on June 4th. Romeo looks to be peaking at the right time, flashing the best stuff our staff has seen from him with the draft now less than a month away.

+ ‘24 INF Brendan Lawson (Trenton Thunder/Florida): Lawson joined Romeo in New Jersey as they took the field for the Trenton Thunder and similar to Romeo, Lawson handled the Draft League competition well. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound left-handed hitter slashed .344/.533/.394 across ten games and walked (12) more than he struck out (10). The former Ontario Blue Jay put seven balls in play at 95+ mph during his ten-game stint. While it’s the offensive profiles and potential impact that have him on the MLB Draft radar, the Florida Gators commit will be able to handle the left-side at the next level. One of a small list of players who have the potential to be the first Canadian high schooler of the board in June.

+ ‘24 RHP Tate Carey (Great Lake Canadians/Michigan): Our staff has seen Carey several times this summer and the 6-foot, 200-pound right-hander continues to impress with his ability to change speeds with a quality three-pitch mix. Carey locates well with the fastball, sitting comfortably in the 88-92mph range throughout his starts. The slider is the out-pitch with more of a downer look at 81-83mph and can land for strikes or whiffs out of zone. The Michigan commit is also comfortable with the changeup at 84-85mph. Works ahead with the fastball and was able to generate whiffs on both the slider and changeup. An arm and talent who looks ready to compete at the next level, whether that’s in college at Michigan or at the professional level.

+ ‘24 RHP Evan Schweizer (Great Lake Canadians/Purdue): In a pair of games that featured a slew of high-level arms, Schweizer was potentially the most intriguing arm as there’s plenty to dream on with the size and stuff. 6-foot-5, 195-pound right-hander controls his body well on the mound and fills up the zone with a good three-pitch mix. The fastball sat 86-88mph and creates ride on the fastball with a downer slider being the go-to secondary offering at 77-78mph. Also features a changeup at 83mph with feel for it. The slider was tough on right-handed hitters and while the fastball didn’t miss many bats, it induced plenty of weak contact. Allowed just one walk and four hits over three innings while punching out four. Will be a fun watch throughout his collegiate career at Purdue.

+ ‘24 RHP Luke Glenn (Toronto Mets/Niagara): On a day where the Toronto Mets rolled out their top upperclass arms, Glenn may have been the best of the bunch. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound right-hander is a clean, athletic mover on the mound with good direction and punched out six over three innings of work. The fastball sat 86-88mph throughout all three innings and used the FB/CB combination to put hitters away. Curveball has more of a horizontal look to it at 75-77mph, along with a changeup at 79 that wasn’t used much. An arm who has a chance to prove himself during the fall at Niagara and earn some innings during his freshman year on campus. Overall, has developed well and continued to trend upwards throughout his high school career.

+ ‘24 RHP Alex Uher (Toronto Mets/Northwest Florida St.): Uher got the start in Game Two for the Mets, working seven complete innings and got stronger as the game went on. Smaller statured right-hander at 5-foot-10, 175-pounds but has long stood with a quick arm and pitchability. The fastball sat 86-88 T89 early on before settling in 85-87mph range later in the game. Worked with an effective two-pitch mix, showing the ability to throw the breaking ball in any count. The pitch has 11-5 shape and runs away from right-handed hitters, helping him generate swings/misses on it. An arm who really has a chance to pop in junior college as he heads to Northwest Florida State.

+ ‘24 LHP Codi Scott (Great Lake Canadians/Jefferson College): Scott in a name who’s gained steam over the past year with overall look and profile look on the mound at 6-foot-4, 200-pounds from the left-side. Minimal effort delivery from a ¾-slot and the fastball sat in the 84-86mph range over three innings. The Jefferson College commit featured a pair of breaking balls, a big curveball at 72-73mph with depth and a slider at 76-77mph with horizontal look and sweeping action. Was able to land all three pitches for strikes and although it’s not overpowering stuff right now, he has the ability to limit hard contact as he changes speeds well. An arm who possesses a high-ceiling as he continues to develop at the junior college level over the next two years.

+ ‘26 INF Elliot Lascelles (Toronto Mets/Uncommitted): Lascelles is a player who’s really jumped onto the scene in 2024 and earned himself a spot on Canada’s Future Games team. 6-foot-1, 170-pounds and can handle both positions on the left side of the infield with good instincts, range and arm strength (85mph). The left-handed hitter features good bat-to-ball skills and works gap-to-gap, but has shown the ability to drive the ball at times, as well. Has the potential to be an impact bat as he continues to fill out as he’s able to find the barrel with ease right now. Moves well around the basepaths with home-to-first times in the 3.75-3.80 range, along with a 6.81 60-yard. Possesses some good tools right now and will be a fun watch in Ontario over the next couple summers as he continues to develop and gain strength.

+ ‘27 CINF Jalen Jacob (Ontario Blue Jays/Uncommitted): The biggest attraction in Canada’s 2027 class and his offensive profile has really taken a leap since we saw him at the 15U Ray Carter last August. As physical as they come at 6-foot-1, 240-pounds from the left-side with true impact already, generating 100+ mph exit velocities and the ball jumps off his bat with ease. Controlled all of his ABs on the day without much chase and had an RBI single up the middle, along with a pair of flyouts. Jacob is the top-ranked 2027 in Canada and will be the lone underclassmen on Canada’s Future Games roster.

+ ‘26/27 RHP Alex Landry (Ontario Blue Jays/Uncommitted): Landry is an arm who put together a good offseason which has translated to a strong summer so far. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound right-hander worked four strong, scoreless innings and the slider (71-73mph) was his weapon of choice on the day as he was getting ahead and putting hitters away with it, generating eight whiffs on it. The fastball sat 82-84mph, coming out of a low-¾ slot with a crossfire look. It’s tough at-bat for right-handed hitters with an effective two-pitch mix right now and punched out six while allowing two hits and three walks.
