Commitment Q&A: Alex Giroux '19/RHP - University of Washington recruit

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

Commitment Q&A continues with 2019 RHP Alex Giroux (Lake Oswego). The 6-foot-1, 185-pound righty is committed to the University of Washington and will suit up for the Huskies in 2020. Here's what National Crosschecker Shooter Hunt had to say about Giroux from Jupiter this fall.

ALEX GIROUX RHP / 3B / LAKE OSWEGO, OR / 2019

Scouting Report

RHP Alex Giroux doesn’t have the high velocity of some of the other players in the class, but his ability to mix three pitches for strikes including a sinking fastball should allow him to be used in a variety of roles. His fast arm works continuously, and he has solid athleticism, so a velocity jump is definitely a possibility which could eventually bump him into a bigger role over time.

PBR: Why did you choose Washington?

AG: I chose UW because both my parents and I thought it was a great fit academically. Also, as soon as I visited the campus, I fell in love with the environment there. In the end I couldn’t really see myself anywhere else.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

AG: I was considering both Oregon and Oregon State, but I felt like UW was by far my favorite out of those three.

PBR: Where did the coaching staff first see you play? Who on staff was your primary recruiter?

AG: I believe Coach Kelly first saw me throw at the Baseball Northwest Championships my freshman summer. Then I attended their camp that winter and threw in front of Coach Kelly again and they ended up offering me a few weeks later. JK was my primary recruiter, I really enjoyed talking to him and I know that he is going to have a ton of knowledge for me as soon as I get up there.

PBR: Who do you play for in the summer/fall and what has that experience been like?

AG: I played for Gunderson Baseball last summer and it was an awesome experience. We had a really loaded roster with some really good arms. Kevin Gunderson coached us, which was awesome since he’s been my pitching coach for almost 7 years now. I also played with the Walla Walla Sweets in San Diego and that was another a great experience. I got to throw against some really good teams and we ended up winning that tournament.

PBR: What is your most memorable baseball moment to date?

AG: I would say my most memorable moment was last year when I threw a no hitter against Tualatin High School. I have a bunch of friends who go to that high school and it really felt special to throw a no hitter against kids I have known for a long time.

PBR: Who is the toughest hitter you have faced in Oregon?

AG: The toughest hitters I have faced in Oregon would have to be either Kyle Dernedde, Christian Cooney, or Anthony Garrett. All three are great players and also great people. I know whenever I’m going against those guys I have my work cut out for me.

 PBR: Any pre-game superstitions?

AG: Before every start I slam a red bull about five minutes before warm ups. I also write in the dirt on the back of the mound before every inning. It’s a good way to clear my mind before the inning starts.

PBR: Favorite MLB player and why?

AG: My favorite player would have to be Max Scherzer. I admire the intensity he pitches with and try to emulate that the best I can. There isn’t a person on the field who wants to win more than Max and I feel the same way when I pitch.

PBR: What would be your top walk-out song? (The edited version)

AG: Ric Flair Drip by 21 Savage, Offset, and Metro Boomin
