Uncommitted Spotlight - '22 OF Tyler Christiansen (Mountainside)

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

Earlier this Fall we had the chance to gather a strong group of uncommitted '22 and '23 prospects from WA and OR to compete against each other down at Goss Stadium on the campus of Oregon State University. The day kicked off with an indoor workout and then concluded with a controlled scrimmage.

PBR events events such as this provide players with the opportunity to build their profile with the most up-to-date information and video footage. All players in attendance receive an online profile with their verified statistics, player report, picture and video. Additionally, all subsequent stories written about a prospect will be linked to the player’s profile, ultimately creating a one-stop shop for recruiters.

Showcases help identify which prospects have asserted themselves towards the top of their class as well as who might be one of the next youngsters to emerge onto the scene. They also serve as potential identifiers for invite-only events such as our Future GamesJunior Future Games and West Coast Games

'22 OF Tyler Christiansen (Mountainside) was a standout during the workout portion of the event. One of the top remaining athletes in the '22 class. Christiansen can do a little bit of everything on the diamond with a balanced collection of tools to go with his overall feel for the game. His size, speed and strength combination should garner attention throughout the off-season as he prepares to have a big showing in 2022.

Scouting Report

10/24/21

Athletically built with a well put together frame at 6-foot-2, 185 lbs. Added physicality since our previous look back in Summer of 2020. Solid runner underway who moves well at his size. Offensively, uses a tall, relaxed set up with slight flexion on back leg and lower half narrowly open. Hands stay relaxed just beyond rear shoulder with limited movement during stride. Weight stays centered at landing and allows him to work through his core and rotate easily. Quick hands with strength at point of contact. Mostly level swing path with line drive contact throughout BP. Gap to gap type power with potential for more raw power to pull-side. Stays balanced thru contact. Defensively, athleticism and tools fit well in OF. Short, quick footwork when approaching the ball then adjusts to longer strides when getting into throwing motion. Keeps momentum behind the ball and works to funnel on his glove side. Shorter arm path for the OF with a 3/4 release. Back side comes thru as he finishes. Solid combination of tools & skill-set to keep an eye on in 2022 season.

6/17/20

6-foot-1, 170-pound slim frame with long levers. At the plate, sets up in a tall, narrow stance with lower half slightly open to begin. Shifts weight back then gets into a low leg lift with some coil into his back hip. Hands stay relaxed and use a slight load while staying below his shoulder line. Showed a flat swing plane with low effort bat speed and level finish. Line drive approach with some lift to his pull-side. Peak exit velo of 92 mph during BP. Projectable actions from the outfield. Moves well and stays agile. Solid footwork, soft hands and a clean exchange into throwing motion. Consistent accuracy to the bag from a high ¾ slot and a loose arm action. Also showed some ability on the mound as well. Pitches with a steady paced, quick delivery. Used a tighter, more compact arm action than what we saw in the OF. Releases from a high ¾ slot. Stays tall at his balance point then shoulders work downhill after hand break. Lands closed with a clean finish at release. Kept FB around the zone throughout, topping at 79 with more velo likely to come as he grows into his frame. Also showed an 11/5 CB (65-68) with gradual action and consistent control. CH worked (66-68) with consistent arm-side control and fading action.
