2014 Spotlight Watch: Colton Hock

Q and A with Colton Hock, a 6-foot-4, 195-pound, RHP, Bloomsburg HS, Class of 2014

                                       Colton Hock

PBR:  What type of training did you do this past winter to prepare for the high school season?
Hock:  A lot of explosive training in the weight room after basketball practice. Basketball was great for the conditioning aspect but what really made a difference were the explosive workouts with high reps in the gym.

PBR:  Now that your sophomore season is coming to a close what do you plan to do over the next 18 months to catch the eyes of college scouts?
Hock:  This summer I will be playing with Coach Helsel and the Evoshield Canes, Mid-Atlantic.  Coach Helsel does his absolute best to promote his players and prepare them for the next level. We have a couple of heavily attended tournaments we are participating in and I am also attending several showcases as well as continuing my workouts in the gym.

PBR:  Who do you play for in the summer and what was your most memorable experience from last summer?
Hock:  This summer I will be playing for the Evoshield Canes 2014’s based out of the Mid-Atlantic region, but last summer I played with our local American Legion team out of my hometown, Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. We knew we had a decent team but as soon as the post-season rolled around things started to click as they should and we ended up in the state championship game. The best part about it was how much fun we could have off the field but as soon as we stepped out onto the diamond it was all business with one goal in mind, winning.

PBR:  What position do you anticipate playing in college?
Hock:  I see myself as a pitcher in college, but I try to practice at every position because sometimes coaches might see you as a better fit for their team at a different position than what you may consider your primary position. Other than pitching I have mostly been playing the corner infield positions this year on my high school team.

PBR:  What is your current GPA?
Hock:  Consistently a 4.0. I am currently ranked 4th in my class.

PBR:  What’s the biggest baseball event or tournament on your calendar in the coming months?

Hock:  It really is a toss-up here. Right after school ends I will be traveling to Minneapolis, Minnesota for the Perfect Game Junior National Showcase. I don’t know much about it but I have heard how important it is to go to this event because of the recognition so I am excited about attending it. This July my Canes team and I will be traveling to Georgia for the Perfect Game 16u WWBA.

PBR: Who is the toughest player in your class that you have played against or with?
Hock:
One of my high school teammates and best friends, Colby Klingerman, has been really having a break out year. Colby and I have worked out together all off-season and it has paid off, his speed and strength is tremendous. We are always competing to be ahead of each other and if one of us makes a mistake we usually are the first to let the other one know it.
