A pair of regular participants in the state tournament hailing from District IX got together yesterday for an early season affair at Rich Kuntz Memorial Field in Punxsutawney.

Punxsy senior Division 1 recruits Braxton Giavedoni (Penn State) and John Matthews (Kent State) teamed up in the first inning to give the Chucks an early 1-0 lead. Giavedoni walked, stole second and came in to score on a Matthews single, one of three RBI for the RHP/SS on the day.

The Chucks added ten runs in innings two through six, only going scoreless in the third, while the Crusaders plated all of their runs in the top of the second inning to take a brief 4-1 lead.

Giavedoni (1-3, HR, 3R, 3RBI) and Matthews (3-4, 3RBI) did much of the damage for Punxsutawney. Fellow senior Lance Pennington (2-4, 2B, RBI) aided the offensive cause and tossed one hit baseball with six strikeouts over the final four innings to pick up the save in relief of Matthews who went the first three for the win.

Juniors Brad Dippold (2-4, 2B, 2RBI) and Dan Stauffer (1-3, RBI) led the Crusaders five hit attack.

Punxsutawney improves to 3-3 with the win. The Chucks are 2-0 in Pennsylvania after a 1-3 trip to Alabama to open the season. Elk County Catholic falls to 1-1 on the year.
