Game of the Day: Hempfield at Penn Manor

Jon PetersonFor the second time this season, Hempfield scored a tightly-contested victory over Penn Manor, as Jon Peterson (top right) out-dueled Jeff Taylor (bottom right) in a game that showed why both teams are highly-regarded in our PIAA Class AAAA Super 16. The 2-1 win put the Black Knights two games up on the Comets in the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section One standings.

After a quiet two and a half innings in which only three runners reached base, Penn Manor kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the third. A single and two walks Jeff Taylorloaded the bases, setting up Cameron Dickerson's two-out RBI single on an 0-2 pitch. Peterson escaped further damage by inducing a pop out to shortstop from the ensuing hitter.

The Black Knights wasted no time in answering back. With a runner on second base and two out, back-to-back singles from Jon Beck and Tim Gailor, sandwiched around an errant pickoff attempt, gave Peterson (CG, 5 H, 2 BB, 10 K) all the cushion he would need.

The Longwood-bound southpaw would allow only two baserunners the remainder of the game: a two-out single in the fourth and a one-out error in the seventh that he promptly erased on a game-ending 6-4-3 double-play. Sophomore lefty Taylor (6 IP, 3 H, 1 BB, 5 K) was nearly as good, setting down the section leader in order in four of six frames.

Penn Manor returns to action today in a non-league tilt against Wilson, while Hempfield's Friday contest against Manheim Township will be its first of two opportunities to clinch the outright section title.
