In the first of two regular-season match-ups between the top two teams in the Inter-Ac from a year ago, and our projected top two teams in the PAISAA this spring, Penn Charter emerged victorious with a 4-1 win over Malvern Prep.

Both squads ran their aces out to the bump. Quakers junior righty Harrison Timberlake escaped a bases loaded, one out situation in the bottom of the first, stranding three of what would become nine men left on base for the Friars. Penn Charter broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third against Chris Butera, who is headed to Lehigh as an outfielder, using four straight two out hits, including a double by Connecticut commit Kenny Bergmann, to push across three runs.  Malvern Prep again loaded the bases with one out the next half inning, all without the benefit of a hit, but was only able to answer with one run of their own.

Sophomore lefty Brendan Cellucci came out of the bullpen for the Quakers to toss two shutout innings of relief, including a nine-pitch top of the seventh, to earn the save. He threw 20 of 29 pitches for strikes, a very positive sign for the 6-foot-4 youngster who has big upside, but has also had some command issues in the past.

Malvern Prep finds itself back on the field today in a non-league tilt with District I AA favorite Devon Prep, while Penn Charter's next contest is Friday against Germantown Academy.
