Game of the Day: Red Land at Cumberland Valley

Greg Williams
Pennsylvania Director of Scouting

Red Land 4, Cumberland Valley 3

Following weather delays to start their seasons a pair of long time rivals got together on Thursday to open up the 2018 season and the result was worth the wait.

Luke WagnerJared PayneRed Land opened up the scoring in the top of the 1st inning when 2020 LHP/OF Luke Wagner, a Georgia commit, walked to lead off the game and came home two batters later when 2019 catcher Jared Payne, a Kentucky commit, launched a home run to left field.

Cumberland Valley answered right back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the frame for a 3-2 lead heading to the second inning. Galen Witmer's two-run double got the Eagles even and an RBI single from David Mangold brought Witmer home with the go ahead run.

Senior right-hander Zane Grimes, a Lock Haven commit, cruised through five innings allowing just one hit following Payne's 1st inning home run. Luke Wagner moved to the mound to start the 2nd inning for Red Land and was just as impressive. Wagner worked 5.1 scoreless innings with seven strikeouts giving the Patriots an opportunity to rally.

2021 LHP/1B Cole Wagner, also committed to Georgia, got things started for Red Land in the 7th with a leadoff single. Following a Mason Walker walk and a passed ball that moved runners to 2nd and 3rd, senior Joey Cotto drove in both runners with a single to center field for a 4-3 lead.

Cumberland Valley mounted a threat in the bottom of the 7th, but senior Mitchell Robertson came on in relief to get the final two outs on strikes for the save.

Grimes (3-for-4, run), Drew Baughman (2-for-4) and Jayson Kramer (2-for-3, BB) all had multiple hits for the Eagles.
