PA Underclass Games Analysis: Middle Infielders

By Jacob Gill
Philadelphia Region Director of Scouting

The 2015 PBR Pennsylvania Underclass Games took place on June 23-24, with 51 prospects from around the state gathering at Tambur Field on the campus of Misericordia University. Our rundown of the participants continues today with the sixteen middle infielders in attendance.

Middle Infielders

Tyler Arnold, 2019, IF, William Tennent
5-foot-10, 140-pound right-handed hitter. All-around game will benefit from strength gains with maturation. Hit from slightly open stance and took short stride to square. Lowers hands to launch; repeatable, pull-oriented swing. Ran a 7.97 60-yard dash and 4.97 in-game home-to-1B time. Showcased 73-mph exit velocity and 68-mph arm strength. Exhibited solid feet; would like to see him field the ball further out front and shorten his release time on throws.

Jarod Bingaman, 2018, IF, Upper Dauphin Area
5-foot-6, 130-pound right-handed hitter. All-around game will benefit from strength gains with maturation. Hit from square stance with heel-raise stride in which heel retreats when it lands. Swing has some length, while it is fairly balanced and hands work pretty well. Ran a 7.88 60-yard dash and in-game best 4.93 home-to-1B time. Showcased 65-mph exit velocity and 70-mph arm strength during workout. Exhibited good hands, solid feet, and ability to get rid of the ball quickly.

Chase Bradley, 2018, IF, Hatboro-Horsham
5-foot-8, 155-pound right-handed hitter. Started from an open stance and strode to square with a slight squat loading weight on his backside. Hips drift forward after front foot lands, inhibiting ability to fully incorporate lower half and creating occasional barrel lag. Ran a 7.86 60-yard dash and 5.15 in-game home-to-1B time. Showcased 74-mph exit velocity and 74-mph arm strength during workout. Accurate throwing arm; would like to see him play lower to the ground in order to field the ball out front more consistently.

David Curreri, 2019, IF, Honesdale
5-foot-9, 130-pound right-handed hitter. Hit from slightly open stance with minimal lift-and-replace stride. Due to youth and lack of physicality, was a bit overmatched offensively in game action. In BP, exhibited a balanced, inside-out stroke with good backside rotation. Ran a 7.82 60-yard dash and multiple 5.03 in-game home-to-1B times. Showcased 74-mph exit velocity and 69-mph arm strength. Would like to see him play lower to the ground in order to field the ball out front more consistently.

John Deenis, 2019, IF/RHP, St. Joseph’s Prep
5-foot-9, 135-pound right-handed hitter. All-around game will benefit from strength gains with maturation. Started from a square stance and double-tapped his stride to slightly closed. Body comes forward with stride, inhibiting ability to incorporate lower half. Ran a 7.55 60-yard dash and multiple 4.69 in-game home-to-1B times. Showcased 74-mph exit velocity and 68-mph arm strength during workout. Exhibited solid actions and glovehand; would like to see him play below the baseball and field it out front more consistently.

Brad Dippold, 2017, IF, Elk County Catholic
5-foot-11, 165-pound right-handed hitter. Started from a wide open stance and strode to slightly open. Body comes forward with stride, while swing has some looseness to it. Picked up four hits in four at-bats on day one of the event. Ran a 7.19 60-yard dash and 4.53 in-game home-to-1B time. Showcased 73-mph exit velocity and 73-mph arm strength during workout. Solid actions defensively, would like to see him field the ball further out front of his body.

Tyler Frake, 2017, IF, Pennsbury
5-foot-9, 150-pound right-handed hitter. Started from a slightly open stance and strode to an open, wide base. Drops hands to launch, limited backside rotation caused bat to come out of zone early. Ran a 7.78 60-yard dash and 4.78 in-game home-to-1B time. Showcased 75-mph exit velocity and 69-mph arm strength during workout. Low arm slot led to some throwing inaccuracy. Would like to see him smooth out his defensive actions and field the ball further out front of his body.

Daniel Gonzalez, 2019, IF, J.P. McCaskey
5-foot-5, 130-pound right-handed hitter. All-around game will benefit from strength gains with maturation. Hit from a slightly open stance with a lift-and-replace leg kick. Would like to see him work to eliminate his backside spin, which creates some length and inhibits his ability to incorporate his lower half into swing. Would benefit from tightening up his strikezone. Ran an 8.09 60-yard dash. Showcased 65-mph exit velocity and 67-mph arm strength during workout. Exhibited solid feet and hands defensively.

Greg Grandelli, 2016, IF/RHP, Roman Catholic
6-foot, 185-pound right-handed hitter. Hit from slightly open stance with heel-raise stride. Repeatable swing with a bit of length, quiet approach, limited body/head movement. Ran a 7.25 60-yard dash and average in-game 4.67 home-to-1B time. Showcased 81-mph exit velocity and 77-mph arm strength during workout (both of which he has recorded better at previous events). Solid defensive actions, gains ground well on throws.

Dominic Leuzzi, 2018, IF, St. Joseph’s Prep
5-foot, 105-pound right-handed hitter. Hit from a slightly open stance, employing a big leg kick reminiscent of a pitcher who has a slight hip coil over the rubber. At his size, it’s an intriguing way to generate some oomph behind his swing. Short stroke, although lack of physicality inhibited ability to consistently control the barrel at contact in game action. Ran an 8.37 60-yard dash. Posted 70-mph exit velocity and 70-mph arm strength. Exhibited smooth defensive actions with good feet and hands, and an accurate throwing arm. Solid DP turn with quick transfer and release.

Jack Liberatore, 2017, IF/RHP, Greensburg Central Catholic
6-foot, 160-pound right-handed hitter. Started from slightly open stance, incorporating knee-height leg kick to a square base. Body stays relatively quiet, some top half dive, hands launch from good position. Ran a 7.53 60-yard dash. Showcased 79-mph exit velocity and 78-mph arm strength during workout. Would like to see him smooth out defensive actions and take angles to groundballs that would eliminate need to stop feet and change direction to throw.

Tristan Lockett, 2019, RHP/IF, Mifflin County
5-foot-6, 140-pound right-handed hitter. Started from square stance and took quick stride to slightly closed with some dive toward home plate. Due to youth and lack of physicality, was a bit overmatched offensively in game action. In BP, swing path was fairly short and his hands worked. Ran a 7.77 60-yard dash and a 4.90 in-game home-to-1B time. Showcased 70-mph exit velocity and 71-mph arm strength. Would like to see him play lower to the ground and smooth out defensive actions to create more rhythm when fielding.

Justin Meyer, 2018, IF, The Haverford School
5-foot-9, 170-pound right-handed hitter. Started from open stance, rocked weight to backside with knee-to-knee stride to a slightly open base. Body and head traveled a good distance back-and-forth with load and stride, while eyes stayed level. Swing has some length with some bat speed and he hits against his front side well.  Ran 7.38 60-yard-dash and 4.72 in-game home-to-1B time. Showcased 85-mph exit velocity and 80-mph arm strength during showcase. Solid defender with good actions/agility and a feel for playing the position.

Anton Rearick, 2017, IF, Elizabeth Forward
5-foot-10, 160-pound right-handed hitter. Hit from square stance with short, lift-and-replace stride. Quiet approach with some loop to swing path. Ran a 7.59 60-yard dash. Showcased 77-mph exit velocity and 69-mph arm strength during workout. Showed solid hands defensively. Low elbow and slot, along with stopping feet on release, led to some throwing accuracy issues.

Kyle Rhoads, 2019, IF, Cocalico
5-foot-9, 140-pound right-handed hitter. Hit from a slightly open stance with minimal, heel-raise stride. Slightly uphill path in a fairly simple swing that lacks physicality. Ran a 7.47 60-yard dash and 4.78 in-game home-to-1B. Showcased 71-mph exit velocity and 75-mph arm strength during workout. Exhibited solid actions with short arm stroke; did nice job setting up to field ball with feet moving toward target.

Kyle Shingledecker, 2017, IF, Grove City
5-foot-10, 150-pound right-handed hitter. Hit from slightly closed stance with heel-raise stride. Quiet approach with repeatable swing that has some looseness. Ran a 7.22 60-yard-dash and posted an in-game best 4.72 home-to-1B time. Showcased 86-mph exit velocity and 79-mph arm strength. Long, loose arm action; straightens up to throw from three-quarter slot. Would like to see him follow his throws instead of stopping his feet on release. Carries glove high, works down to ball, tendency to field ball deep.
