Pennsylvania Players of the Week (May 2 - 8)

By Greg Williams
PA Director of Scouting

Today we take a look at the top position player performances in the state over the past week. This feature will run on Thursdays for the remainder of the high school season and will include four players recognized for their performance over the past week. Players will be recognized by geographic location and will be voted on by the PBR staff of scouts.

Independent Schools Player of the Week: Kevin McGowan, Haverford School, Class of 2015

  • McGowan is a 5-foot-10, 165-pound 3B/SS that put up big offensive numbers this past week. He did his damage against three ranked teams (Springside-Chestnut Hill, Conestoga and Malvern Prep). For the week McGowan went 8-for-11 with four runs scored, two doubles, three RBI and two stolen bases.

Eastern PA Player of the Week: Billy Nelson, North Pocono HS, Class of 2013

  • Nelson is a 5-foot-11, 185-pound RHP/3B that had a remarkable game against Western Wayne, leading North Pocono to a 14-0 win. Offensively, Nelson was 4-for-4, with four doubles and drove in three runs. As if that kind of production was not enough, the Indian River State recruit was even more impressive on the mound. Nelson threw six innings, surrendering just one hit, and struck out 15 Western Wayne batters. Nelson struck out the side in four separate innings, retired 11 in a row by strikeout and tallied 14 of his 15 strikeouts via swings and misses.

Central PA Player of the Week: Devin Weyandt, Claysburg-Kimmel HS, Class of 2013

  • Kimmel is a 6-foot-3, 225-pound OF/RHP who is having a breakout senior season. He is hitting .438 with 24 RBI and 6 home runs late in his senior year. In the last four games, Weyandt has gone 10-for-15 with four home runs, eight runs scored, a double, and 13 RBI. On Monday alone the senior went 5-for-5 with three home runs, four runs scored and eight RBI.

Western PA Player of the Week: Brian Bohman, McDowell HS, Class of 2013

  • Bohman is a 5-foot-8, 170-pound catcher that is currently hitting .569 on the season. The Penn State Behrend recruit has gone 6-for-7, with five runs scored over his past two games. He also hit a triple, a home run and had 6 RBI in those games.
