Fall Prospect Notes: Nebraska

It’s safe to say the Will Bolt era got off to a bang. We won’t bother counting the 15-game 2020 season, technically Bolt’s first as Nebraska’s head coach, but the 2021 season was filled with big moments that prompted Huskers fans to remember what Nebraska baseball was like when Bolt was a player.

The move to the Big Ten hasn’t been the smoothest for Nebraska, in several sports, but a 34-14 season and a conference title helped change the narrative for the baseball program. They clinched the title, and a spot in the postseason during a 4-0 weekend in Bloomington, taking down two of the league’s better teams – Indiana and Ohio State – twice each. They capped off the season with a series win over Michigan and beat the only other Big Ten team to make the NCAA Tournament, Maryland, earlier in the year.

The Huskers made the Field of 64, but when the teams were announced Coach Bolt and his squad learned they would be traveling to Fayetteville, Ark., to face the No. 1 team in the nation and his head coach during his playing days, Dave Van Horn.

That essentially meant Nebraska was viewed as the 32nd-best team in the nation, which wasn’t a fair assessment but certainly not something any coach is going to make excuses over. They did battle Arkansas to force a regional-decisive game before their magical season ended.

Spencer Schwellenbach was named the Big Ten Player of the Year for his remarkable two-way contributions. Max Anderson received Freshman of the Year honors and Bolt himself was named Coach of the Year. Roughly a month later he would be rewarded with a contract extension through the year 2026.

Joining Schwellenbach on the All-Big Ten First Team were catcher Luke Roskam, outfielder Jaxon Hallmark and starting pitcher Cade Povich. That quartet, and a handful of others, have since moved on, with Schwellenbach making the most headlines by signing for nearly $1 million ($997,500) as a second-round pick of the Atlanta Braves.
