Florida Draft Insider: Preparing For The Next Class

By Nathan Rode and Rob Sidwell

The 2015 Draft took place June 8-10, which also meant focus shifted to the 2016 class. As teams are making their picks, area scouts have already started the process for the next draft. It’s a never-ending cycle. Florida scouting director Rob Sidwell, who was an area scout for four major league teams across 18 years, offered his thoughts on the transition from one class to another.

I think scouts really bear down on guys for a particular class for that draft, as far as getting to know them, gathering information about them. Especially the makeup, the background. But you’re always trying to build history with a player. Even though you’re bearing down that particular class for that particular year, you’re always trying to build your follow list. When you’re going to watch a guy that’s eligible that year, a good scout will always keep an eye out for those younger guys as well. Especially if something jumps out at them. A tool or a play or something they like about them. Just building that follow list so you’re building a history on a player instead of just watching them that particular year.
