Roberson vs. National Field

Brandon Hall
Mid-Atlantic Scouting Director

TC Roberson was the North Carolina representative at the 2023 National High School Invitational (NHS) hosted by USA Baseball at the National Training Center in Cary, NC.  The event ran from March 29 - April 1.  The single elimination format features teams assigned to a 4 team bracket with the winners from day one playing one another  and the losers playing.  From there, a consolation bracket is setup for teams with 1 or 2 losses while the undefeated teams move to their elimination bracket.

Roberson, ranked No. 4 in PBR’s NC Power 25, played 4 games vs. 4 highly regarded teams.  At the end of the week, the Rams played well in spurts and probably walk away feeling they had a chance to win 2-3 games on the week, but dropped all 4 games. Below is a quick recap of each game TC Roberson played along with a scout blog on players that caught the attention of PBR Scouts attending the NHSI.

Game 1: Santa Margarita Catholic (CA) vs. TC Roberson

Santa Margarita Catholic entered the NHSI ranked No. 15 in the country in the most recent PBR High School Team Rankings. Collin Clarke (2023 RHP) punched 12 in 6 shutout innings, limiting the Ram offense from the get go of this outing.  Clarke would get run support in the 3rd with a 2 runs crossing the plate.  As the game entered its final two innings, Santa Margarita got into the Rams bullpen and plated 2 runs in the 6th and 7th innings to take a final of 6-0.

Game 2: TC Roberson vs. Doral HS (FL)

Doral comes into the NHSI at No. 16 in the PBR Southeast High School Team Rankings, looking for a big week that could push them into the national rankings.  The Rams locked up Doral, keeping the game at 0-0 into the bottom of the 5th.  Doral pushed two runs across on a 1 out SAC Fly and a single following an infield error that pushed the Doral lead to 2-0.

TC Roberson battled back in the top of the 6th. Zeb Swangim drew a leadoff walk and scored on Nick Parham’s double down the left field line. Unfortunately, Parham would be stranded and Michael Torres (2024 OF/LHP, Miami commit) would close the door, tossing the final 1.2 innings for a save.

Game 3: Hagerty (FL)  vs. TC Roberson

Hagerty, No. 20 in the PBR Southeast Regional Rankings was the first of a double header on Friday for TC Roberson.  Hagerty would jump out quickly plating 3 runs in the 1st, but the Rams would battle back.  Down 3-1 into the 7th, TC Roberson was able to force extra innings.  The Rams, down to their last out saw Nick Parham draw a walk, followed by an infield single and another walk to load the bases.  Caden Davidson then walked to score Parham and a pass ball scored the tying run.

In the 8th, Roberson gave up a two out, two run double to give Hagerty the lead again.  Hagerty would score 3 in the frame and then work a perfect bottom half for the win.

Game 4: TC Roberson vs. Bishop Verot (FL)

Bishop Verot jumped out to an early lead, plating 2 in the second and answering a single run from the Rams in the 4th with another 2 spot to lead 4-1.  TC Roberson would score another single run in the 5th to cut the lead to 4-2.

In the 7th, the Rams would make another run at the game.  Nick Parham singled to open the frame.  Two hitters later Caden Davidson doubled home Parham.  With one out and tying run on 2nd, Reno Jeter singled to left where Bishop Verot left fielder, Trevor Welch made an strong, accurate throw home to cut down the Ram pinch runner.  Jeter advanced to 2B on the throw but was left stranded as Fidel Alviar got the save inducing a game ending fly ball.
