TN Game Report: Creek Wood @ Clarksville

Tim Kay
PBR Tennessee Director of Scouting

On Monday, Creek Wood traveled to Clarksville to play a doubleheader, of which we were on site for the first game.  This kicked off our summer coverage.  At this stage of the calendar, with 2018 rankings complete, we will not be writing up committed 2018’s (we will still write up uncommitted 18’s w/ video on their profiles) unless it is Scouting Director Tim Kay’s first live look at them in the calendar year.  We saw Clarksville in February (previously evaluated here) and weather on this day was in the 80’s to 90’s with sunny weather.  For a look at standouts, read below:

NICK JAMES / LHP / CLARKSVILLE, TN / 2019

FB (85-88), CB (71-73), SL (76-78), CH (82)

-       4 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K

Uncommitted lefty showed improved off-speed stuff across the board while pitching at the top end of his velocity range more since we saw him in February.  Quick, loose arm w/ up-tempo, repeatable delivery.  FB showed occasional late arm-side run.  Both breaking balls have improved markedly, tight medium downer CB and ¾ tilt SL w/ late bite, flashes depth.  Mixed in a firm straight CH.  30 of 49 for strikes, including 24 of 40 FB’s.  Projects to command, stayed out of the middle of the plate.  Generated 12 swing and misses on 22 swings, including 9 of 18 on the FB.
