Updated NC 2020 Rankings Climbers

Brandon Hall
Executive Director, PBR of NC

Late last week the North Carolina Class of 2020 rankings were updated and expanded to the top 300 players in the state.  The rankings were not due for a complete overhaul, as they had been polished in early November.  Since the last rankings update, PBR Scouts have hosted multiple events, including the 2020 PBR ProCase.  They were also able to get out, prior to the suspension of the 2020 season, seeing workouts, practices, scrimmages, and games.  While there was not a lot of movement throughout the rankings, several players did make jumps with their performances in the winter.

The PBR rankings process includes PBR Scouts seeing as many players in the state as possible.  When a PBR Scout has seen a player enough, they will add a player grade and confidence rating to the player in our rankings database.  The confidence rating is ultimately a reflection of how many times a player has been viewed and if our scouting staff has seen the player in a variety of scenarios.

Once players are in the rankings database they will be sorted blindly, hiding name, school, and commitment.  Players are sorted by their player grade and then their confidence rating. As players are sorted, the name, school, and commitment are added back so the PBR staff can sort players with similar grades and make any corrections needed to the list.

Below we jump into some of the players that made jumps in the rankings.  Our PBR staff is still working to gather information and we hope to be back on the road in the near future.  As the suspension of play is lifted, PBR will be working to assist the 2020 class, those that are uncommitted and those working to get their information to pro scouts, getting ready for the 2020 MLB Draft.

Updated 2020 NC Rankings: Risers

ProCase Climbers

On February 9th, PBR Scouts hosted 25 of the top players in North Carolina from the 2020 and 2021 class at Diamond Xtreme in Kernersville, NC for the PBR ProCase.  The ProCase was attended by over 20 MLB organizations, with several teams sending multiple scouts. Players in attendance went through a modified indoor workout. Pitchers threw controlled bullpens with velocity, spin rates, and video being recorded.  Position players were able to run a laser timed 30, followed by a workout defensively and offensively. The space at Diamond Xtreme allows scouts to see the ball fly off the bat with a 100’x100’ cage.

These players saw their player grade bumped up, and their ranking climb, after their performance at the PBR ProCase.
