Baylor Steelman, OF/LHP, R/L, LaVergne HS, 2016

The saying is that good things can come in small packages.  Standing at 5-foot-7, and weighing 132-pounds, the smaller-framed Steelman is proving that statement to be true. What he may lack in size and true speed he makes up for in natural instincts, skill set, and competitiveness.

Hitting from a slightly open stance Steelman uses his hands well producing solid contact with a line drive approach.  He went 1-for-4 in game play at the Fall Top Prospect Games event where he legged out an infield single while showing good awareness on the bases.  In addition, he posted a 4.51 home to first base time.

Defensively, Steelman showed one of the top velocities of the event at 85 mph from the outfield with line carry to the bag.  He takes precise routes with athletic actions and aggressively attacks the baseball on the ground.

Using long arm action on the mound, Steelman’s fastball sat 77-78 mph with good arm side run and occasional cutting action.  His best secondary pitch is his 65-70 mph curveball that has 1/7 shape with good arm speed that is consistently effective.   He also mixes in a changeup with good sink at 67-69 mph. Steelman works the lower half of the zone well with repeatable mechanics.

Steelman should make significant contributions both as a position player and on the mound to his LaVergne Wolverines team this spring.  It could be an opportunity to gain some attention from recruiters looking for an athletic player with potential to improve as he continues to get physically stronger.
