West Tennessee Preseason Preview Outfielder Evaluations

Adam Akin
Director of Scouting

The 2017 PBR Tennessee West Tennessee Preseason Preview took place on Sunday, February 12 at Houston High School’s baseball field in Germantown, Tennessee and included a position player workout, followed by pitcher bullpens.  Players were afforded the opportunity to showcase their abilities in front of the PBR Tennessee staff and college coaches in attendance. The following is our evaluation of every outfielder that participated in the event.

Garrett Schultz, OF, Ensworth, 2019
60 Time: 6.88, Position Velocity:  OF-88, Exit Velocity: 86
5-foot-11, 165-pound, RHH hits from the same narrow and slightly open stance we’ve seen from him in the past, has added a smooth and abbreviated leg kick and stride with his movement back of his hands to get loaded, lower half fires his back hip through with some aggressiveness and keeps him strong with its width, bat path begins a little steep, but can get behind the ball and drive through it with some lift, drove some balls to deep left field.  Defensively, showed sure hands and athletic footwork in the outfield, played through the ball with confidence and led a clean exchange into a long and loose arm action through a near over-the-top slot, strong arm produced firm and accurate throws with a lot of life. Continues to impress.

Parker Moss, OF/LHP, Collierville, 2017
60 Time: 6.87, Position Velocity:  OF-80, Exit Velocity: 85
6-foot-1, 175-pound, LHH hit from the same balanced and open stance we saw from him at the Top Prospect Games last June, hands are relaxed with a high elbow cock, uses a pretty generic stride that can get a little longer with a cock of his hands/barrel to get loaded, lower half certainly fires his backside through and creates some strong separation, swing plane is pretty flat and can create some lift on balls left up in the zone, has the ability to spray the ball around the field and possesses some pull side pop.  Defensively, showed good hands and footwork in the outfield with the ability to play around and through the ball consistently, arm action comes through a high ¾ release point and produced accurate throws.

Hunter Ensley, OF, Huntingdon, 2020
60 Time: 6.85, Position Velocity:  OF-82, Exit Velocity: 87
6-foot-0, 165-pound, RHH hits from a wide and even stance with relaxed hands to begin, simply lifts his left heel and sits it back down with a quietening of his hands to get loaded, lower half fires his back hip through the zone and keeps him balanced by maintaining that width, short swing can get a little steep to contact but usually provides some lift through his extension, likes to drive the ball toward the left-center gap.  Defensively, showed good hands and footwork in the outfield, stayed very under control, easy exchange led to a shorter but loose arm action through a high ¾ slot, arm strength will continue to improve.  Tennessee Commit.

Hunter Crosby, RHP/OF, Dickson County, 2018
60 Time: 7.26, Position Velocity:  OF-82, Exit Velocity: 86
6-foot-4, 170-pound, RHH hits from a wider and mostly even stance and begins with his hands relaxed near his back armpit, uses a smooth and conventional stride with a slight push back of his hands to get loaded, lower half fires and keeps him pretty well-balanced throughout the swing, bat path is generally pretty flat through the zone but can get steep on pitches down, stayed up the middle at his best, can come around the ball from time to time.  Defensively, showed decent hands and above-average footwork in the outfield, played through the ball aggressively, exchange was quick and a little rushed and led to a short but quick arm action through a high ¾ slot.

Cooper Smith, LHP/OF, Henry County, 2019
60 Time: 7.35, Position Velocity:  OF-73, Exit Velocity: 71
5-foot-10, 125-pound, RHH hits from a wider and even stance with a beginning hand position up near his head and out front, uses a weight shift back with a toe-tap and stride and a movement back of his hands to get loaded, lower half is active but doesn’t fire very quickly, bat path comes into the zone a little steeply but flattens out near contact, showed a middle approach.  Defensively, showed average hands and footwork in the outfield, could’ve played through the ball more consistently, long arm action comes through a high ¾ slot, arm strength should improve.

Marcus Lanos, OF/1B, Cordova, 2017
60 Time: 7.03, Position Velocity:  OF-70, IF-72, Exit Velocity: 70
5-foot-10, 160-pound, RHH hits from a tall and open stance with some very upright posture, hands start high with his elbows tucked in, uses a shorter stride with a slight lowering and push back of his hands to get loaded, lower half is quite underutilized because of how narrow he stays throughout his swing, bat path is mostly flat through the zone but drags a little bit at times, contact was toward right-center a lot. Defensively, showed pretty good hands and footwork in the outfield, played through it aggressively, arm action is shorter and a little stiff through a high ¾ slot, arm strength has room for improvement.
