The 2024 Texas high school baseball season is quickly approaching and, as usual, excitement is abound throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Texas.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Austin at the UIL State Tournament in June, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Texas. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, eventually releasing our Preseason Power 30 rankings that’ll carry us into the opening week of action.

TEAM OUTLOOK

The Madisonville Mustangs finished as 4A Bi-District Finalists in 2023, and they aim to make a deeper run in 2024 behind their strong defense. Coach Jacob McMurtry will bring back four key returners from the 2023 playoff team that will hope to pick up where they left off last season.

Headlining the group will be Houston Baptist signee C/INF Caden Miller (2024), who is currently ranked No. 68 in the state, and was awarded First Team All-District in 2023. Miller will be the battery mate of Southern Arkansas commit RHP/OF Cameron Thrower (2024), who was a Second Team All-District player last season. Another arm that will be working with Miller this season is junior RHP/1B Izayah Drake (uncommitted). Drake stood out last season as a two-way player earning First Team All-District. Rounding out the key returners for the Mustangs is sophomore RHP/INF Cade Campbell, who as a freshman earned Second Team All-District.

The Mustangs have some intriguing pieces coming back this season that will make them an interesting team within the 4A class all spring. Look for Madisonville to be in postseason contention again in 2024.
