The 2024 Texas high school baseball season is quickly approaching and, as usual, excitement is abound throughout the state. Players and coaches have been working in preparation for the upcoming season and, as is the case each year, there are some very talented players and teams across Texas.

Teams across the state have goals and aspirations to finish their seasons in Austin at the UIL State Tournament in June, but there is plenty of work to be done before that becomes reality. We hope to familiarize our readers with many of the teams across the state as we preview individual teams across Texas. We will take you right up to first pitch this season with these team previews, eventually releasing our Preseason Power 30 rankings that’ll carry us into the opening week of action.

TEAM OUTLOOK

After finishing as 6A Area Finalists in 2023, the Weslaco Panthers and Coach JJ Garcia look to make another postseason trip in 2024. Pitching is expected to lead the way for the 2024 Panthers, as well as the veteran players they bring back from last season.

On the mound, the Panthers will be led by two-way player, INF/RHP Jesse Gomez (2024; uncommitted), who looks to be the tone-setter for this year’s pitching staff. Teaming up with Gomez in the senior class on the bump and up the middle will be INF/RHP Julien Casares (2024; uncommitted). Joining the pitching staff in 2024 are a pair of two-way newcomers in junior OF/LHP Isaiah Garza (uncommitted) and sophomore RHP/UTL Diego Castillo.

Elsewhere on the diamond, look for a pair of seniors to lead the way defensively for the Panthers this season in CIF Ryan Everitt (uncommitted) and OF Austin Perez (uncommitted). The senior leadership on this year’s squad will be crucial in leading the Panthers to where they want to go as a team. With their pitching and senior leadership, look for Weslaco to compete for another 6A playoff berth in 2024.
