Argyle vs. Sweeny

AUSTIN, TX- We were on site for the 4A State Championship game between the No. 1 ranked Argyle Eagles and the Sweeny Bulldogs at UFCU Disch-Falk Field at the University of Texas. In a deafening environment that would make it difficult for any pitcher, both teams would send respectable arms to mound in this rematch of last year’s 4A state title game. Argyle would send Utah commit RHP Sean Bolin who has nearly been perfect posting an 8-1 record for the Eagles. Sweeny would counter with Texas A&M commit RHP Caden Homniok who has also been very effective for the Bulldogs with a 11-2 record.

In the first, singles from Texas Tech commit Dillon Carter and Chad Ricker would set the table for an RBI single from ACU commit Hayden Clearman, that would push across the first run of the ballgame for the Eagles (1-0).

After a scoreless second and third from Homniok, Argyle would begin to find their stride in the fourth. Texas A&M commit Cade Merka would push across the first run of the inning on an RBI double down the left-field line (2-0). Houston commit Bo Hogeboom would immediately follow Merka's double with an RBI single (3-0). Texas commit Brenden Dixon would tack on one more for the Eagles with an RBI single that would sneak past the left-side of the infield. Argyle would scratch for three runs in the top-half of the fourth to give them a four-run lead (4-0).

Sweeny would break through in the bottom-half of the fifth, after a leadoff double from freshman Collin Coker and a hit-by-pitch would put runners in scoring position for the Bulldogs. Senior Joe Effenberger would drive in both runners on ball that would get past a diving defender in center-field that would result in a two-run RBI triple to get Sweeny on the board (5-2). Homniok would follow with a ball to left-side of the infield that would be deep enough to score Effenberger (5-3).

In the top-half of seventh, Argyle would an insurance run a ball that would skip away from the catcher to score UTRGV commit Austin King (6-3). Sweeny would not be able to get anything across and would ultimately fall to the defending state champions 6-3. Argyle was as advertised all season long and becomes back-to-back 4A state champions, in a dominate season that resulted in a forty-win season that only saw one loss (40-1-1).

Final Score: Argyle 6, Sweeny 3.
