SAN ANTONIO – The CC Ray Texans and Dripping Springs Tigers met on neutral ground to play game 1 of the 5A Region 4 semi-finals in front of a packed house. Ray HS sent 2019 LHP Ronald Vasquez to the mound, while Dripping Springs sent 2018 RHP Grant Gaspard to the bump.

Dripping Springs got off to an early start with two runs in the top of the first, with RBI singles from Reed Beverly and Pete D’Alessandro. The Texans were quick to answer with four runs of their own in the bottom half of the first inning. A couple of Tiger errors and a walk loaded the bases. Consecutive singles by Andrew Canales, Alex Aitken, and Vasquez put the Texans up 4-2.

Dripping Springs’ starter, Grant Gaspard, helped his own effort with a towering solo home run in the top of the second inning to close the Ray lead to 4-3. But CC Ray regained the two-run lead with an RBI fielder’s choice by Joseph Anaya in the bottom of the third.

Dripping Springs scratched out another run in the top of the fourth when Reece Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Britton Howeth.

The score remained 5-4 in favor of CC Ray HS. In the top of the seventh inning, Dripping Springs tied the game at 5 after a defensive miscue by the Ray defense. In the bottom of the seventh, Nick Loftin singled to lead of the inning, moved up on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a walk-off RBI single by Andrew Canales. Final Score: Ray 6, Dripping Springs 5.

Game two is slated for Friday at 5 pm in Jourdanton.
