Coronado vs. Lubbock Cooper

LUBBOCK, TX – The Lubbock Cooper Pirates (12-9, 3-2) hosted in-town rival Lubbock Coronado (9-12, 4-2) on Friday night in a district 3-5A matchup.

Runs were hard to come by in this matchup with both starting pitchers battling into later innings. Senior RHP Landry Watson got the start for Coronado, Watson would throw five complete innings, allowing four hits, punching out five, and allowed a run. Throwing for Lubbock Cooper was junior RHP Aidan Pantoya, Pantoya would go the distance, throwing six scoreless innings, allowing four hits, collecting five strikeouts, and allowed one run.

The first runs of the ballgame wouldn’t come till the top of the fifth inning, that started off with single from 3B Caden Hensley (Midland College commit). Hensley would later score on an RBI triple from CF Cameron Stevenson to give Coronado a 1-0 lead. Lubbock Cooper would respond with a run of their own in the bottom half of the fifth, that started off with a leadoff single from 2B Kaleb Scull. Scull who would later score via base on balls, tying the game at one apiece.

Coach Gary Hix would make the decision to go to junior RHP Bo Jacob Garza in the sixth, to work in relief for Coronado. Lubbock Cooper would start off the sixth with back-to-back singles from junior 3B Bryson Stevens, and sophomore 2B Kaleb Scull. The Pirates would take a 2-1 lead after a sac-fly to LF from C Benton Ford, that would ultimately secure the victory for Lubbock Cooper.
