Inside the 2022 Rankings - SS
April 28, 2021
TEXAS - As we take a dive a little deeper into the rankings, lets take a look at the top ranked SS in the 2022 class. We have a mixture of high level athletes, defenders, as well as offensive spark plugs that can change a game at the plate.
The No. 1 Spot is held by Jayson Jones. The ball comes off Jones’ bat differently as the barrel stays in the zone forever on a flat path. His 6-foot-2, 185-pound frame already showcases some physicality although it will likely add even more strength in coming years which will only aid the already impressive power that he has. Jones’ quick hands whip the heavy barrel through the zone, and he is a persistent threat in each at-bat and any count. An athletic defender at SS, the Arkansas recruit is an immediate impact player, and might ultimately be the best hitter in the class.
Landing in the No.2 spot is Anthony Silva. A Futures Games alumni, Silva has always had the ability to defend at a very high level. It is something that seems to come very natural to him. His hands and feet work really well around the ball on the routine play. He plays through the ball well when he needs to, and shows the ability to throw the ball on the run from multiple arm angles
Coming in at No. 3 is Conner Weigman, who is probably the best athlete in this class and I don't think it's really close. He recently committed to A&M to play football and baseball. Weigman has small simple actions that produce loud results on a consistent basis at the plate. Playing SS now, depending on how big he may get from football, that may determine what position he ends up on the baseball field, but one thing is for sure, Weigman’s bat plays at a very high level.
Claiming the 4th spot is Travis Sanders, who is a natural defender whose hands and feet work at a high level around the ball. He shows the ability to play through the ball on the run, as well as move both to his right and left and play through the ball, with the ability to throw from multiple arm slots. At the plate, Sanders continues to impress, showing a quality approach to go along with a balanced, athletic swing that stays in the zone a long time.
In the No. 5 spot we have Jett Williams, a dynamic athlete at the top of the order for the Heath Hawks. He has the ability to create chaos in many different way at the plate. He can take you deep in the count and cost you a lot of pitches resulting in a two strike approach single, and swipe a couple bags. He can also drive the ball in the gaps and occasionally out for a HR when he gets a pitch he likes early in counts. Williams is a natural SS but is athletic and talented enough to run out to CF and control a game from out there as well.
Jordan Medellin lands at No. 8. He is balanced in his approach from both sides, he exhibits an ability to slow the game down while finding consistent barrels throughout. The frame is still adding strength, and as it does, he should continue to see an uptick in power production from his present spray line drive ability. Another one of the many SS that actually has the ability to defend there at the next level.
