Inside the 2023 Rankings - SS
April 29, 2021
TEXAS - The 2023 graduating class in the state of Texas shows a well-balanced group all over the field. Today we take a look at a few of the top SS. Some known more for their bat and some known more for the glove but all will be guys to see this summer and follow their improvements. We are excited to follow along with all of the prospects we have already seen, and look forward to seeing many more that will soon make jumps and work their way into future rankings.
Claiming the No. 1 spot is Tristan Russell. the Florida State commit is an athletic, switch-hitting SS with a smooth swing from both sides and ability to hit it to all fields. Russell has a natural feel for the position and shows no reason he won’t stay at shortstop at the next level.
TJ Pompey comes in at the No.2 spot. The Texas Tech Commit has an ease to his game that is not often seen in a young player both at the plate and defensively. Wiry-athletic with plenty of physical projection, the right-handed hitter has quick hands with some whip to the barrel. There is some uphill intent, and his well-connected setup and fluid load provide for some explosive movement through impact. The likelihood that Pompey develops even more power in the future seems strong, and as the frame continues to mature and add strength, he should acquire it quickly. - Shooter Hunt
Dondreone Kennedy lands at the No. 4 spot. Kennedy plays much bigger than his listed size, and has a chance to be an impact player in all facets of the game. Defensively, he tracks impressively well in centerfield with 6.8-speed (4.2 home-to-first) and confident hands that allow him to shift to the infield when needed and a strong arm that has run fastballs up to 86 mph on the bump. Add to that his eye-opening bat speed and present pull side power, and he has a chance to stick at the top of the order. - Shooter Hunt
Landon Hunt comes in at No. 10 and is an exciting player that college coaches will want to get eyes on as soon as they are able to get out again. Listed at 5-foot-10, 165-pounds, there is some natural strength throughout an athletic frame, and some natural feel at the plate that helps his quick hands get the barrel through the zone. - Tyler King
