The O’Connor Panthers entered the game with a record of 12-7 (8-1 in conference), while their opponents, the Marshall Rams came in at 14-4-1 (6-3 in conference). The Panthers sent their ace, 2017 LHP Weston Smith (Baylor Commit) to the mound, while the Rams gave 2018 RHP Branden Quintana the ball.

Both starters worked through the first four innings with relative ease. In the top of the fifth, the Rams broke through to get on the board. Josh Gill reached on an infield single, and after a walk and a single, Jordan Thompson hit a sac fly to center field to score Gill putting Marshall up 1-0.

Neither team scored in the sixth inning, but Marshall would explode for four runs in the top of the seventh. Junior Matt Klar started the inning by lacing a curveball down the left-field line for a double. Gill and Quintana reached base on base hit bunts to load the bases. Two runs came across after an HBP and a walk. O’Connor went to the bullpen for RHP Brandon Jenkins. The first batter that Jenkins faced, senior Chase Gordon, hit a 2 RBI single up the middle, putting Marshall ahead 5-0.
