Power 25: Week 4

Toby Bicknell
Texas Scouting Director

TEXAS, USA - The High School Baseball season is in full swing with the end of tournament season, and the start of district play. Remaining in the Number 1 spot in this week's Texas Power 25 is Lake Travis. The Cavaliers are now 14-0 after winning their third game against Buda Hays last week, and they don’t look to be slowing down anytime soon with a stacked lineup and solid starting rotation. The only problem we can see for them moving forward; does their district strength of schedule keep them in the number one spot, should they continue to win.

Not much has changed overall in the rankings this week, with most teams playing only two district games per week moving forward. However, there were a couple of shake-ups with teams that went 1-1 last week. Moving forward, the strength of the district will have a much larger impact on the rankings.

The Top 5

+ San Antonio Reagan: The Rattlers have extended their winning streak to 15 games with 3 wins last week, including a 6-0 defeat of Churchill.

+ Southlake Carroll: The Dragons took their first two district games with wins over Preseason Power 25 Flower Mound. They won 6-2 on Tuesday, and 9-1 on Friday. This lineup is for real, they have three quality starters, and strike throwers in the bullpen.

+ Sweeny: The Bulldogs resume speaks for itself, with 14 straight wins against big time competition. They are the highest ranked non-6A school in our rankings for a reason. Sweeny is a tough, gritty team, but they did lose their first game of the season last week against Huffman-Hargrave.

+ Cypress Ranch: The Mustangs went 2-0 to start district play.

ON THE RISE

Not as many changes this week, most teams moved up a couple of spots simply because of teams that went 1-1, instead of 2-0, however...

+ Rockwall: The Yellowjackets went 3-0 this week, starting 2-0 in district, and beating No. 18 Grapevine in a non-district contest.

New to Ranking

+ Episcopal: The Knights are now 13-4-1 and we listed them as a bubble team last week. They went 3-0 with wins over Monsignor Kelly and Emery Weiner. Their early season resume adds to their rise this week with wins over Cypress Ranch, Barbers Hill, Pearland Dawson, and probably the strongest strength of schedule for any private school in the state.

+ Klein Collins: We saw the Tigers in person on opening weekend. They went 2-0 last week to move to 12-3 overall and they have played a tough schedule with quality wins over Goerge Ranch, Southlake Carroll, and Conroe. They have a bonafide number one starter in 2019 RHP Christopher Benavides (Sam Houston State commit), and they can score runs in bunches with power hitting 2018 3B Diego Davila (Sam Houston State commit).

+ Round Rock: Back in the rankings this week after going 2-0, winning 4 in a row to bring their record to 11-2 overall.

ON THE BUBBLE

Now it gets tough, with strength of district, and early season contests having a much larger impact. Many teams play more games in three weeks of tournaments, than they do the rest of the season. So, teams that play in tougher districts have a better chance of moving up, and into the rankings as their quality wins tally up. A number of factors come into play, most importantly, strength of schedule, district and non-district.

+ Rockwall Heath: The Hawks are 12-6-1 after going 2-1 last week. They have a big cross-town rivalry series this week with Rockwall.

+ Godley: They are undefeated at 11-0, if they keep winning, they have a strong chance of getting in.

+ College Station: Went 2-0 to start district play and they are now 11-4 with a strong early season schedule.

+ Pearland: 13-6 after going 2-0 to start district with big early season wins over Friendswood, Episcopal twice, and The Woodlands.

+ Summer Creek: 13-4-1 Overall with a 2-0 district start. Have won 12 in a row with wins over Cypress Creek, Manvel, and PNG.

+ Liberty Christian Argyle: Solid club, we have seen them live three times. Went 2-0 to start district with 2 wins over Prestonwood, resume wins over All Saints, FW Christian twice, Plano West, Rouse, and El Socorro.

+ Katy Tompkins: 12-5 Overall, they went 2-0 last week with wins over Seven Lakes and Morton Ranch
+ Brenham: 12-5-1 Overall. The Cubs have won 6 in a row, defeating Magnolia West and College Park.

+ Odessa: The Broncos are 16-3 after winning 8-of-9, they went 2-1 last week with wins over
