season preview

Memorial High School put together a solid 2016 campaign, amassing 20 wins overall and an undefeated (12-0) conference record. The 2017 Mustangs return an experienced pitching staff, which is a big advantage with the new pitch count rules. Christian Roa, a 6-foot-4 Texas A&M commit and 1st Team All-District winner, will lead Memorial on the mound. The Mustangs also return a mix of other players that have logged varsity innings, including Patrick McNulty (1st Team All-District), Eli Reichmann, Walker Zander and Luke Milstead.

The defense will be anchored behind the plate by Justin Collins. Collins, a Rice commit, has a strong arm to go with an advanced frame and has proven that he can shut down the running game with sub-2 pop-times. Also working the middle of the field is senior infielder Hayden Kerns. Kerns is a 6-foot-2, athletic player with fast-twitch tendencies. Patrick McNulty is another 1st Team All-District player from 2016 that will see time at second base and on the mound. Junior infielder Ben Stubbs returns for the Mustangs, rounding out a solid defensive unit. Look for a handful of other juniors and sophomores to make up the rest of Memorial’s line-up as they have to replace some valuable spots in the order.
