PBR Texas JUCO Insider

TEXAS, USA - Another week into the season and weather is still affecting play. As highlighted in the Week 5 Preview the Paris vs Clarendon series was canceled due to winds up to 50 mph, otherwise many teams still played. Several teams started their conference play,  while others continued their tough pre-season schedules. Eight teams had undefeated weeks: #1 San Jac (3-0), #2 McLennan (3-0), #10 Weatherford (3-0),#12 Navarro (1-0), #16 Angelina (3-0), #23 Galveston (3-0), #24 Paris (1-0), and #25 Hill (1-0).

In this weeks Recap we dig into three of those undefeated weeks, one team that had a huge week, and as always the Hitter and Pitcher of the Week.

#2 McLennan (3-0)

McLennan was affected by the weather. Their weekend series with #8 Howard was pushed back a day in hopes of avoiding it. Even so, the Highlanders had a big week. With 2 wins against Howard on Sunday and an early week win against #19 Wharton

In their first game, the Highlanders used 7 pitchers in 9 innings none going more than 2 innings. The game was won for them in the last inning. It started off with a FR INF Jordan Yeatts single followed by a walk of FR SS Garret Martin. Both were brought in by a FR OF Ryan Neitsch Double. Who later came in to score thanks to a single by FR INF Brett Squires.

The wins against Howard were due in part to great starts from FR RHP Mason Hilton and SO RHP Alex DeLeon (uncommitted). Neither gave up runs during their time on the mound (Hilton 3 ⅔ IP, DeLeon 5 IP). SO CF Brooks Embry (uncommitted) led the way at bat in those two games going 3-6 with 3 doubles, and 5 runs batted in.

#10 Weatherford (3-0)

The Coyotes had one of the top offensive weeks in the state. Lead by the duo of FR 2B Cole Johnson, and SO SS J.T. Thompson (Texas State) as they outscored Odessa 20-4. Cole was 5-12 with 2 doubles, 2 runs batted in, and 5 runs scored himself. Thompson was 4-9 with a double, as well as scoring 4 runs.

Do not miss the great pitching in this series. Two Coyote pitchers threw complete games, with one being a shutout. In game 2, SO RHP Carlos Tavera (uncommitted) went 7 innings striking out 4 allowing just 1 run. In game 3, SO RHP Trevis Sundgren (Texas State) went 5 innings striking out 5 with just 3 hits.

#23 Galveston (3-0)

The Whitecaps traveled down to Laredo this past week and put on an offensive showcase. Outscoring their opponent 30-9 in just 3 games. This was lead by SO OF Ian Matos (Alabama State) and SO INF Corbin Vines (Sam Houston). Matos was 4-13 on the week with a big 3-run home run in game one that shifted the momentum for the weekend. Vines went 4-12 with 2 doubles while bringing in 8 runs and scoring 3 himself.

On the mound SO RHP Jacob Jimenez (UTSA), had a complete game shutout in game two. Going 6 innings striking out 5 while only allowing 4 base runners.

Team to Watch:

UR Western Texas (3-1)

Western Texas was the surprise of the week. They swept their mid-week series with #13 Ranger and then took game 1 against #3 Cisco. Leading the way for them was SO INF Carson Burns (uncommitted) and SO DH/RHP Abel Pena (uncommitted). Pena led the way going 7-13 with 2 doubles and 5 runs. Burns was just behind him going 3-8 with 2 doubles while driving in 2 runs.
